it depends on whether or not you have air in the system
the fan system is electric over air and can be a normally open or normally closed and is computer controlled. -
No when you turn the engine off the fan engages that's normal
thaistick Thanks this. -
They have them both ways. My truck has an air on fan, so with it shut off, the fan spins.thaistick Thanks this.

Sometimes with the truck off and key on I hear air hissing, not all the time...just trying to determine if I need to replace it. Fan does not stay on while running down the road, unless of course I it the override switch.

What kind of truck?
-
Like to know myself I have a 99 Sterling with a detroit 60 and the fan doesn't spin freely also but the fan runs all the time. Don't know if it's the over ride switch, solenoid,or clutch itself.

2006 century

That it works when the switch is on would point to a problem outside of the clutch itself. Possibly a sensor or some other problem in the control side of the fan.
thaistick Thanks this. -
Fan will only stay on if temp is above 210f once under that it cuts off unless you hit the fan on switch.Bean Jr. Thanks this.
