Make a trip up to north eastern ND in about a month and see for yourself. Potato harvest and sugar beet harvest will be in full swing. Sugar beets go 24/7 and Potatoes run as long as possible during the day. I know of a few farmers that are pulling double duty. Spuds during the day and beets in the evening and through the night.
I had to drive 1 truck that had a freaking kitchen sink in it for a seat, this is no ####. The cooling system leaked so bad that I could not even run it with the radiator cap on it. The mirror on the right side was smashed.
During harvest, they don't fix any issues, just patch it together and get it out too the field as quick as possible.
Farmers may need CDLs

I believe you. I would imagine there are some real gems running up in the oil patch right now as well. I wonder how many of these trucks are under a different corporate shelter than the rest of the farmers assets (land) to prevent the consequences of a wreck from poor equipment from taking the entire farm away. Maybe removing the corporate hiding places would bring the quality of the equipment up or they'd hire someone else to handle that part of the business.

I know alot of farmers that have their own trucks and keep them in better shape than some trucking companies that haul commercially every day, not just a few times a year.

^^^When your being subsidized by the government it's easy to have newer equipment and keep it in top notch condition.
Like I said before alot of farmers that wanna be truckers have nicer and better equipment than the commercial haulers, but that's easy to do when your main income ISN'T trucking.
Farming is a business to make money, no more no less. I dont know why the government has to feel sorry for the farmer all the time and give them hand outs, I mean if you cant make any money farming go find a different line of work. Alot of people feel sorry for farmers but I'm not one of them. -
I am a farmer and I dont take any government help. I decided to get my CDL so I didnt have to worry about these laws, and so im qualified to drive. We own 3 trucks and they are used but are in great shape. They look good and run good, and I make sure that there everything is working like it should. Alot of farmers just run there old trucks down the road with pieces falling off because its what they have, but I believe if you have a truck.. everything should work and atleast look decent.
bullhaulerswife and Rat Thank this. -

Every farmer is subsidized in some way, shape or form. Ethenal plants are subsidized so if you sell your corn to an ethenal plant you are in a way being subsidized. Also if you have crop insurance and your crops get wiped out by a hail storm, you still get paid. All I do is haul grain, if all the crops around me get hailed out and I have no grain to haul I dont get paid. All I'm saying is that if farmers play there cards right they always get a check in the mail no matter what, And dont think I'm some dumb city kid. I've lived in the country my whole life in a farming community. Hell, my hired man is a part time crop adjuster & some of the storys he tells me about how farmers are trying screw over the insurance company are just crazy.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not against the american farmer but I dont understand why they are always exempt and dont have to play by the same rules as everybody else. -
I will agree with you there then, we do haul to the ethenal plant. But our crop insurance is like the insurance on your truck, if you get in an accident you will want the insurance to pay for damages. Farming is no easy task by no means either. As a matter of fact I have 53 acres of corn that got hailed on, and with my insurance money I will be lucky to break even with my expenses on putting the crop in and rent on the ground. Just because we get a check in the mail doesnt mean all is well. My insurance locks in 90 bushel corn when I was expecting 150 to make a profit. Instead of upkeep on a truck and trailer.. the farmer has the tractors, combines, planters, and then trucks and trailers ontop of that. Im not wanting any sympathy, I like what I do but were not on easystreet.

When the guv'mint stops telling farmers what and how much they are allowed to grow, then the subsidies need to stop. Until then, the limiting power (guv'mint) needs to pay for revenue the farmer would have otherwise made off his land.
In other words, you need to stop telling the farmer what and how much he can grow. With your vote....and with your voice.
