Unfortunately, I don't see that happening either.
The states can do whatever they want. Marijuana is still a schedule 1 narcotic according to the FDA, and the whole discussion really is moot until that changes.
Technically, that affects gun owners as well for those who didn't know, since there is a question on the form 4473 regarding habitual drug use.
Most states already have laws prohibiting this, and it's easier for an officer to detect it than you may think. All he'll have to do is drive behind you for a bit. The smell is unmistakeable.
I believe that's already in place.
That, in my mind, represents the biggest danger in legalizing it at the moment. There needs to be a way to measure and quantify it in one's system.
That was tried before, during the Prohibition years, and that experiment failed miserably. So alcohol no longer gets mentioned.

I support marijuana legalization, because as a former smoker myself I can tell you that I'd rather smoke pot than drink. It takes effect faster, wears off faster, and doesn't leave you sick in the morning. Obviously though, because of what I do for a living, I can't touch it.
I have a serious problem with the idea of anyone losing their job because they got high on a weekend 3 weeks ago in their own living room."semi" retired Thanks this. -
We can "ratchet jaw" all we want on this, but a more clear and present danger, is common sense(or lack of it), patience, and distracted driving. Just yesterday, in rush hour traffic, young girl stuffs into a Handi-van, hard, folds the front of her little car, knocks the spare from under the van loose, I mean, come on.

I see more of that because of cell phones than anything else."semi" retired Thanks this. -

And it does not matter to that dead persons family if the driver was only stoned, or drunk. The outcome is the same.... -
Hi MACK, I agree with most of what you say, except the taper off part. I think ,if legalized, use would skyrocket, because I'm sure people that don't do it now for fear of getting caught, would then be able to use it. Whether people like it or not, it's gaining steam, and states that are severely financially strapped will have no choice, because the revenue it will generate, and the savings in not busting people , will be too hard to ignore.
Useage is already through the roof, theres just no accurate statistics, quality control, etc. It's a multi-billion dollar (primarily) black market at the moment. -
Organized crime exists on the basic principles of economics, in their case supply and demand. Theoretically, you'll dry up the demand for the services they provide by legalizing their product, thus putting the corner pot pushers out of business.
I wouldn't suggest legalizing everything. I draw the line at the white stuff. But marijuana is relatively benign by comparison. -
