Here's how its usually done. A ham listens on 28.085 AM. He does NOT say anything: he can't...........legally because it is a "digital" portion of the 10M band. The truckers use this 28.085 AM because it is (?) "two clicks up" on their export radio. Because they don't hear someone talking in the sense they understand it (that beeping and squeaking they here is just noise to them), they think it is "an extra channel that nobody uses anyway". The trucker then sees this ham driving along on the interstate and he is curious about the "odd" antenna on the vehicle. He also thinks its a "CB" like his. (After all, EVERYTHING is a 'CB', right?):biggrin_25514: SO he hails the ham on the radio, and the ham happens to be LISTENING. He is able to IDENTIFY the truck because of the proximity of the vehicle, signal strength, and what is said. He then records the truck's tractor #, frequency of operation, date, time, direction of travel/MP # and turns the info over to FCC as a COMPLAINT of interference. They do the rest.

Laws/regulations of all kinds are designed to prevent harm, both real and perceived. Unauthorized radio operation caused HARM to other users and CAN hinder emergency operations. It HAS happened with regard to ham frequencies, and there are recorded cases in FCC archives of such occurring and people being severely punished for it----even going to jail.
(See the case of "Rabbit Ears", Florida about 10 years ago. That's just one example. While CB operators are mostly "appliance operators" and have little training on the impact of illegal operation, it DOES cause harm, same as does someone breaking in one's house and stealing. If this weren't true, then there would be no need for laws, criminal or otherwise. If there were no radio regulations, NO ONE would be able to effectively use radio for business, pleasure, OR commerce.

While some hams may get something about being "radio police" they are not. But they WILL try to stop people from filching their bands. It IS right and correct.

It is nothing like breaking into someones house and stealing their property. It is like an unlicensed driver using the highway without a license.

One is a felony while the other is not.

What some hams are doing would be the same as me purposely blocking speeding traffic. Then calling the cops because people are speeding etc.

So just get off your high horse already. Don't you have some type of radio to go PLAY with????

Ah yes, Rabbit Ears. Interestingly, none of the hams bashing CB'ers nonstop on this board mention this part of the above page; "As a police officer, we occasionally have the abusive and obscene bootleggers come on the frequency. Often these guys are also offending on the local ham repeaters and pretty soon everyone knows who it is. It is just harder to quote/unquote...prove it in court.FCC enforcement is basically nonexistent. Here is a sad case of a 29 year suburban Chicago Police officer that died last week arresting someone causing interference on their frequencies.

A Barrington Illinois Police Officer died after struggling with a HAM (WB9DIG) who had been repeatedly been causing intentional interference on the Barrington Police emergency frequencies. The ham WB9DIG is now charged with numerous charges which may result in additional charges of murder, for resisting a police officer.

Too often rouge hams find it necessary to modify their radios to transmit on police frequencies. We as hams should report these rouges to Riley Hollingsworth and assist the police in ferreting out these idiots and pulling them off the air. This incident just only drives a wedge between police and the 99.999 percent of hams that obey the rules."

I did not notice mention of any CB'ers causing the death of a police officer. So you hams are not as god like as you want us to believe are you.

Neither point makes a difference. So you are saying if only he had been an extra class or maybe younger the officer would not have been harmed? I see hundreds of posts by hams badgering and lecturing CB'ers as if they are lower life forms on this board. Yet not one post of hams talking about the mote in their own eyes. Lets be real. Talking with glee about prison for a CB'er yet not one mention of cop killer hams. Where is the fairness?

Getting off on a technicality does not bring the officer back. Nor does it alter my point. You however have a real gift for missing the point while trying to defend the indefensible.

CB'ers on a CB forum do not need the never ending ; warning, threatening, lecturing, being talked down to, ... and so on by ham operators. If you treat me like you are above me for my choice in radios then my mission in life must become forever putting you in your place.

SO ...the man was not CONVICTED ....and still holds a license EVEN after interfering with part 90 radios .....

I work for the S.O. and IF there was any truth to this story there would have been a conviction .... and he would have lost his license in 2002 ... and not renewed it in 2005 ...

The FCC has zero tolerance for interfering with police and THAT would been his down fall cop or not ...

    BY THE WAY ...

Our local FCC got Mr Rabbit ears ....
