I had 4 drive tires getting thin in the tooth so rotated the steers to replace two of them and bought brand new steers. Couple months later rotated those newer steers back to the drives and bought two more steers for the steer axle. Seeing two tires on my trailer getting chewed up but still legal, will be rotating my steers back there and buying two more brand new steers for the steer axle soon.

In 24 years , have had two steer tires blow out. Not fun, but if handled right not that big of deal.

Realdesert, dont let a blowout worry ya. A steer tire that is ready to blow will give you a little warning. If you keep the tires inflated properly (all the time) & dont hit curbs & other stuff you got nothing to worry about. A tire about to fail will pull a little to the direction of the bad tire. also, for example, a bad left tire will make the steering feel heavy when in a right hand curve & vise versa, or the steering wheel will shake back & forth like a very unbalanced tire. Dont ignore these warnings! And last, a casing seperation is usually visible with a close look at the tire itself. I blew a left steer tire taking an offramp in LA in 1973, It was warning me for the previous 20 miles but I was a kid & wondered....Why does the steering feel funny on these right hand curves???

Yep,,,very first day of training. 20 minutes north of KingdomCity, Mo. 2 lane skinny grass shoulder, 55 mph, 2 month old set of Michilins BOOM ! Remained steady, no panic moves, ease over on the shoulder bring it to a stop.
Trainer was sitting in a pile of crap, very pale looking.he didn't move for 3 minutes. Gave me a thumbs up,,he had never had that happen in all his years..welcome to trucking.

I fear some of these clunkers out there that are running on all cords, His last pretrip was a year ago and half the truck is held together by duck tape. I fear that more then I fear my steer blowing out.

I don't see those around much any more. Where are you crossing paths with them?
