It’s a
Same as any other occupation .
Plumbers electricians welders airplane pilots truck drivers etc
Most women just are not interested in those occupations .
We could speculate all day as to the reasons , but the reasons don’t really matter .
trucking is more of a lifestyle , not just a job .
If you have a family or kids etc , it’s more difficult just because of the hours you will work . Even with a local driving job where you are home every night , the employer will basically expect and demand that you work 12-16 hours a day ,
99.9% of the time you will not be paid overtime either .
If you are single and don’t mind being gone for a few days or a few weeks at a time and don’t mind living in a vehicle that’s the size of your bathroom at home , working oddball hours and long hours and having every shipper and receiver treat you like you’re just dog poop stuck to their shoe , and every cop And DOT weigh station person treat you like their personal ATM , it might be a viable career choice .
just make sure you are realistic about the math and the wages .
Every trucking company will expect you to work 70 hours a week , or more .
so when they talk average earnings , be sure to do the math .
It is NOT a 40 Hour a week job.
that said when I was younger and didn’t have kids , I loved driving . I bought my own rig and worked with a mostly “power only “ business .
I pulled someone Else’s trailer loaded with cargo that they had with a direct relationship with the shipper and didn’t involve brokers .
when you’re interviewing with a trucking company , ask what percentage of their loads come from a direct relationship with the shipper and what percentage come from brokers and load boards .
you want to avoid brokers and load boards.
Brokers steal too much money off the top and there is not enough profit left over for anyone else to make any money .
I’d suggest , if you can , to attend a CDL class at a nearby community college or vocational school. It will be far cheaper than a private school and a better class too.
And be very careful with the companies that train you without you attending a CDL class on your own .
They will have you sign a loan for somewhere in the neighborhood of $7,000 and if you quit working for them before the specified time , usually 12 to 18 months . They will sue you to get the money back , and if they can figure out what other company you went to work for they will threaten to sue the other company for hiring you. -
Uninformed humans suffer too much pain after making poor choices.
I'm relatively new to this forum.
There are a lot of veterans posting here.
They are the ones doing the heavy lifting.
And they can explain this industry in couple short paragraphs like no one else.
Kudos to all of them, and this website owners too.RangerMelB, Sirscrapntruckalot, RuralTrucker and 2 others Thank this. -
If you are contemplating working within the trucking industry as a driver--the following forum thread is probably a good read--before you invest any real time or money in it:
