Hey there gnrfan1, how are ya?
I just had a quick question. I read your post about working at fedex as an RTD. I've been a DOT Handler with fedex for the past 3 years and am interested in getting my CDL and being an RTD. My question is, when you applied for the position, did you have a CDL learner's permit like they ask for in JCATS? Or did you apply without it and when you got the job they sent you to training?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm sorry it's a taken a me a while to reply. It's funny you ask this question because I found out the hard way that you do need the permit at the time you apply in JCATS. When you bid for a position in JCATS for RTD the manager sends you a supplemental packet which is basically an application and they require a copy of your permit at that time. It's just one way to weed out and disqualify applicants so have it ready in CA the permit is good for a year so it's a good idea to get the permit that way you'll have it ready when an opportunity arises. As far as behind the wheel training you are sent to the regional trainer if you get the position and given 3 weeks of full time training plus a couple weeks with a driver trainer at your hiring location to refine what you have learned so that you can pass the DMV test.

Sorry for the long answer hope I answered your question, feel free to ask if I missed something and good luck!

Your not kidding lol, the only way someone seems to retire early or leave the position is either by messing up somehow or their body breaking down i.e knee problem, etc. and that was probably a result from maybe being a courier earlier in their career so a 25+ year plus RTD driver makes up about 90% of the workforce lol

Good to see some discussion of FedEx Express RTD Drivers. I was a Handler for about 3 years when I first bid on an RTD position. I also found out the hard way that you need your CDL permit before applying. My first bid got kicked out. I then got my learners permit and bid the next time I saw an RTD posting and I was shocked that I got the job because my CEV score was so low. I was number 6 on the bid, but I got the job. My training was done in my city so I did not have to travel, which suited me fine. I have been driving on my own since February and I am really liking it. Sure beats the hell out of being a handler and the pay is a lot better too. I am part time though as there is an incredible amount of seniority at my location. I never thought that I would become a Truck Driver, but this is a really great job. I wish I had become a Truck Driver years ago, but I am grateful that I had the opportunity with FedEx Express when I did. If there are any FedEx employees out there who wants to become a Truck Driver, get your learners permit and apply EVERY TIME you see an RTD job posting in JCATS. Also make sure that your SUPPLEMENTAL APPLICATION is complete. It is a lot of paperwork but if it is incomplete, you will not be considered for the job. I had a Trucking Manager look over mine before I submitted it and he found several items missing or incomplete that would have kicked me out of consideration if I had not corrected them before submitting the supplemental. Good luck.

Hey ExpressDriver and gnrfan1. I would love to be an RTD but I don't work for FedEx. I already have my CDL and all the endorsements and have over a year driving experience. Let's see if I'm right, I would still have to start out as a package handler or a courier, and when the position came open for RTD I would have to bid on it? Being a RTD sounds like my dream job for FedEx lol. I've applied at Fedex freight but I might be willing to get on with express and put some time in. How many hours do yall get a week being a RTD? And whats the average paycheck a week for yall?
