Abf has a pension program, very rare these days in trucking from what ive seen. But I also believe youd have a harder time getting a local position with them. Check out their website , they used to list the drivers pay and benefits very clearly.

While youtube is a good idea coupling doubes was also covered in the cdl handbook for my state......poor ol MS. So you might want to add that. The advertisements for city driver in my area mentioned having to carry in packages up to 100 lbs, hope your ready for that, I was doing appliances and hauling fridges up driveways and stairs for a year so im looking forward to that.

"Before fedex I worked at conway so I already had the experience with pulling doubles." so Im really curious what made you leave conway and what if any were the improvements at fedex, Im still looking at both , I just got my doubles and tanker today. Came close to passing my hazmat test but no cigar. Will get it Monday......

City Driver Full-Time Combined Dock/P&D is very easy to get, A new hire "full time" or "part time" road driver position forget about it.
A new hire will get a taste of Road Driver when everyone else turns it down/Road drivers is on vacation/sick or when your TM NEEDS to have extra freight moved. Of course Areas Vary !Last edited: Nov 1, 2014

Best to do is get your 2 years experience for ABF. otherwise they will send you to a school and your contracted for 2 years after. So if you quit you pay them back. I know know of only 3 LTL companies that offer a pension. One being ABF,the other being UPSF. and the third is NEMF which is only in the northeast
Giuseppe Ventolucci and Shaggy Thank this. -
Ups offers a pension too.

On this note, how similar are ABF and YRC?

On your question about ot, from what I heard in an interview they give you enough drive time that you never get ot , when you work the dock you get hourly and the good hourly is for not getting any ot so that you still want to stay . You start out on short runs as the senior drivers getter the longer runs and will keep them so they dont have to do any hands on. But then Im applying for an apprentice position and you obviously have more experience. If you have a chance to apply for abf go for it, they are just as good as fedex , ABf posts on their site as to where they are hiring. But you have a job so you dont have to wait too ancily....Shaggy Thanks this.

I catch myself doing this all the time on here. Each and every Terminal is run different and pay is slightly +/- a few bucks for each region.
This is nothing like my barn, I think your'e confusing/mixing the Basic structure of positions and honestly have no idea until you get seated for a few months.
Not flaming you, Just be aware of "blanket" statements from your position as a Noob. The core positions is the same in each terminal, but the totem pole dictates a lot.
Over all a great company. We fly under the radar and many drivers still don't know who ABF is.
Have any questions send me a PM SOAthor.Last edited: Nov 5, 2014
