its not going to happen overnight, I mean it will take time for them to fight to stop doing it the cheap way and have their guys work...
@Cenutryclass, Majority of FedEx groun contractors dont give you health insurance and a lot of it is a set salary.

If your run got cut 4-5 nights a week, you would not be singing that same tune, i promise ya.. Then the next day you show up, the yard is lined with 53 wagons. I went through this, it is not fun. If that freight is on a purchse van, one driver somewhere in your company had his run cut. It doesnt affect you, so ofcourse its ok. I am not attacking you in any way..but those are just the facts.chalupa Thanks this.

We have a 20+ year FedEx guy that hauls fuel for us occasionally on Sundays, and he always said if he didn't have to work holidays and weekends hauling gas, he'd work for us, and leave FredEx in a heartbeat... He makes more per hour at FedEx, but hauling gas is a better job he says. That is all I know about FedEx...
DrtyDiesel Thanks this. -
exactly the reason I propably wont do fuels..Weekends are kinda sacred to me. Gave too many away in the military..Ill bust my ### M-F but Sat and Sun I want off

One thing for me is I prefer week days off and I'll work weekends no problem.

You're sure right I'd be singing a different tune. But I've never seen (or heard of anyone who's seen) that happen here. I understand why the issue is typically less than desirable when contract carriers are running freight that a full time driver should be running while he's sitting at home. But I've yet to see a driver at SEFL sit at home because XYZ Trucking Inc. is hauling his load. If the freight is there, it has to be moved. And regarding overflow or inconsistent freight, I'd rather a contractor run it because they can be called upon and relieved instantaneously. Much better than hiring someone full time for freight that may or may not be there every night, THEN the driver sit at home because one night there's no freight to move. So from where I'm sitting and the way things work around here, let the contract drivers fight for the scraps.
I can not count how many times I've pulled into my barn to arrive for my shift, and I see two, three, sometimes even four or five big contractor trucks parked out front just waking up because they laid down at our terminal that morning. I also can't tell you how many times they've left our house hauling nothing but sailboat fuel to get them out of there while WE are moving the freight. 5 contract drivers sleeping out in the parking lot seems like an awful good reason to call our 5 regular guys up on the phone and tell them not to come in tonight. Nobody is picking up that phone in that office and calling us though... -
It's nice to be able to schedule appointments without having to take a vacation day/sick time, etc... Not much traffic on the weekends (although around here a lot of road closures during the summer months). Sunday is my favorite day to haul gas. I will gladly take a mon-thurs or tues-fri shift in a few years, but for now, it is what it is. Having to work Thanksgiving/Christmas does suck though.DrtyDiesel Thanks this.

I hear ya man.
I've been exchanging emails with the terminal manager for Eagle, told me to cal him after my birthday since I need to be 23 for him to go any further. I'm assuming insurance reasons. I might not make as much at eagle as I would with gemini but I'm looking to do what I can. -
Hauling gas is a 12hr a day job to make any money at it...plus weekends and holidays ofcourse. Upside is, it's stable
Don't be fooled by the "we pay OT" at fedex freight...you won't see it anyway.
OD is the place to be right now in LTL, they don't pay OT after 8 but, they also aren't kicking you out the door with 6-7.75 hrs either.DrtyDiesel Thanks this. -
The bolded statement is incorrect. You are paid milage while driving and hourly for dropping, hooking, fueling, and working the dock.
The pay rates vary depending on where you are at. Metro areas pay more than more rural areas but your numbers are fairly accurate.
I have been with FXF for 16 months. I was on a bid run of 87 miles each way for the first 6 months. I either worked the dock or did a turn to a nearby hub each night while on my bid. I averaged about $850-$1100 gross weekly. Since January I have been on the extra board (my choice). I average 2400 miles per week and have only worked a dock 4 times this year total. I am on pace to make $80,000 this year.
While it is true that a number of drivers were cut during the last COO, my barn was not cut at all and at the hub nearest me all drivers who were cut have already been hired back plus a couple of more hired.
No company is perfect, but in a large company you will always find people who think they can run the company better. I have zero issue with the way I have been treated by FXF. I have never been asked to do anything unsafe or illegal. I am home everyday. I gross about $1500/wk since January and I average about 52-54 hours per week. Assuming I don't lose my job I cannot envision leaving as long as I am driving a truck. YMMV, but for me it is a great place to work.fastSVT, Gearjammin' Penguin and Wharf Rat Thank this.
