I do this as a business, I have a bunch of trucks in diversified segments in this industry and one is with FedEx. I can tell you that hiring a manager is not the best way to start. It is one of the problems we have with owners who don't have any experience and many managers are profit driven.
If you want to start in this, learning what you need to learn just to buy the trucks, you have to do more than throw money at it, you have to be an active participant in it. Starting with driving and moving up to understand every aspect of the industry and business is needed. You as a vet had to go through basic training or officers training and then more specific training, they didn't hand you a map and a radio when you joined and told you to do the job.
A really huge problem we have in this industry is cheap and crappy owners. Many owners like me want to see them get the hell out of the industry. Everything from buying junk to not paying the drivers fairly has put this industry into a form of having anyone who breaths and can pass a drug test be put into a truck and abused.
So as I said, it is prudent to start at the bottom to learn what's what then move to make purchases.
