Do some reading in the forums here. Many have posted their experiences with LTL companies. Yours sounds very similar to theirs. Some love it, others hated it and left.

Welcome to every intrastate job out there. With intrastate jobs that pay by the hour, your employer is going to use you during layovers (yes, layovers still happen with local outfits). Also, routes are obtained by senority in most cases. You're going to start off doing the grunt work until you start building senority within the company. If you don't want to do any manual labor, there's always the option of returning to OTR.

At least you have the option of working the dock and getting paid when there's no driving to be done. You could just as well be sitting home on your tuckus and getting even LESS hours.

I was told I would do pick up and deliveries and do some dock work to make extra hours. The problem with leaving is the money. Most places that will hire me with my experience are not paying what I make working part time on the dock.

I did the same thing...I gave it 3 yrs and finally left. I only got 40hrs twice, I think. After 2 1/2 yrs of 28-30hrs on the dock at freight(and freezing), I transferred to National Linehaul, right after that, they merged...and I sat home mostly.
If your young, I'd probably stick it out, stay in the city though.
