Fiance is in school to become an RN, has several years left on that. The rest came from my last career. Was in sales making 55-60k/yr. Was raised solely by my mother, and I lost her this year. I was devastated. After that I couldn't stand to be face to face with people anymore, and left selling. I turned to trucking in hopes of being able to pick up the financial slack and to find some level of solitude while still being a contributing member of society.

We do not have kids yet, but would love to think about that soon. Still, we have our monthly rent and utilities, my car payment (which I'm working a deal out with my finance company to shed the car I have in favor of a cheaper one with a reduced payment since it just sits for weeks at a time now), cell phones (we don't use land lines), vehicle insurance, health insurance.

Enough with all that though. I wish to remain trucking but not who I work for currently. Do I bother riding this crap train out another month or two before leaving, or do I make the jump now? And where should I look to work for? Maverick is looking pretty good at the moment.

And no need to chime in about the right way of doing things - I know the right way to find a new job. I have a hole in my wallet, not my head :)

First ask yourself, do you like the actual "Trucking" part of it - second, can you put up with the other aspects of trucking (shippers, receivers, dispatchers etc. ) If you were clearing $1000.00 a week would you still make it as a trucker --if yes -continue on.
Please read a thread under "motor carriers - the inside scoop" - "schneider" - "Day to Day adventures of a new solo OTR" --posted by Diselfuelonly.
Its a great read and i think he only averaged just about the same money at "Schneider ", he seemed to run just about as fast and efficient as their system would let him --so if you are running hard too - that must be about the average money, miles -that they want to give their The basic new drivers.
With that said i like what "Chinatown " said -- if you are going to stick it out for another 6 months --get on their "Tanker division" it would be great experience to have and i assume lead to good money jobs in the future.
If you have to drive for poor wages why not use them like they are using you.
If you like trucking in general tell your girl just to stick it out for a little while longer.
Refer is the same generally (basically) the same as the van you are pulling -so you could jump right into it with some general guidance about hauling refrigerated.
Flatbed is also an option but why not try tanker since you are already in Schneiders system.

Not a terrible idea. I can try to find out if I can transfer to bulk before this 6mo thing ends to get the experience.

To your point about the rest of trucking - I have enjoyed most of what I've encountered thus far. I had one 2 hour lumper unload take over 6 hours - who wouldn't get irritated at that? The rest has been fine. If I was earning even 750/wk with schneider I would stay at least a year and deal with the rest of it.

Edit: I'm not sure what you mean by fees? To the best of my knowledge the only things taken out are for my CPAP, my insurance, and if I take an advance.

Yes all "Fees" they pull out beyond taxes -- comdata, personal money draws, perdiem -crash deductibles .
your cpap --anything thats drawn out beyond what a normal 9-to5 job had taken out in your normal life.

Excellent point -- The way i see it if you are running 100% legal on your logs (Electronic i assume) you will never make jack --unless you drop and hook every time in 15 minutes - and never get hung up at a shipper and receiver, not to mention drive 600 a day- mathematically i cant see it.
If the electronic logs will let you show sleeper or off duty while unloading- loading -do it (you still have to show some time there).
There is no way you can sit at a receiver, shipper not to mention waiting on pickup orders and other time wasted for hours a day -(not by you) log it legal and be able to drive hard (the time you are paid for).

I'm scared to ask, do you get paid for the time spent playing mystery trailer search for an MT?
