A US fellon can apply for entry in advance.
There is a procedure for this.
Was discussed a while back here on TTR.

PS it is not just Canada who screens fellons.
I know for a fact Australia does the same.
Doesn't matter how old the conviction is.(know off a guy who has a 25y old conviction.....was let into the country after extra screening)

Kinda like a no fly list?

I was never dispatched to Canada due to a DUI I received in the US. The Company said the delay caused by the border patrol would create issues with the load. Boy, was I lucky, I didn't want those loads anyhow.

It doesnt even take a dui. When i was 19 i got charged with underaged drinking. 10 years later i took a load to Alaska and it took 22 hours to get across the border coming from the lower 48.

It is a rehabilitation program, they just take the money and you get cleared.

Except that the officer at the border can still refuse you entry and/or toss you in jail if they want.

The majority of folks get turned back because what CBSA does, is look at what you were convicted for in the us, and translate that conviction under our criminal code. For example, dui is the most common one. It’s a misdemeanour stateside, but equates to a felony under our criminal code. The easiest way to see if you will be granted entry, is to spend $50.00 and apply for a FAST card. Both countries review your background, and both have to accept you.
