My reply ,was to the butt wipes going all negative and implying they have never done anything crazy and/or dumb.
My ego doesn't need strokin', as I am what I am, take it or leave it. -
Something you have to think about and will have to prove to a company that might take you with your past record is are you mature enough and have learned from these past mistakes that you will now be let behind the wheel of truck and can guarantee there will be no messups of any kind?
The other thing you need to think about is what do you have to offer that is different from all the other qualified candidates with clean records?
I know that all the older drivers used to get a job by just showing up, introducing themselves, maybe go for a test drive and bang they were hired. It doesnt work that way anymore. Insurance companies and regulations (like CSA 2010) make it a lot more difficult.
Good luck with your search as its going to be a long one. -
I would not waste my time, cdg1984. We've all screwed up at some point or another, some do several times, but many don't get caught. For the ones that do, unfortunately, these things follow you for years, making employment difficult. The trucking industry is one of the more difficult, if not impossible ones for you to pursue given your history. Just take a few hours to read the want ads for drivers and read what the qualifications are... 1 DUI is the limit, and many places want that within 7-10 years. 3? Forget it.
I've no qualms with a man who has screwed up in the past, even several times. But I hate to see someone beat their head against the wall and struggle in futile efforts. My advice is to not put yourself through the time and expense of getting a CDL and then dealing with the overall struggle you're going to have finding a driving job. Just my .02.Mommas_money_maker Thanks this. -
In a short period of time, I've become my dispatchers "go-to driver", and am often told that he wishes more drivers were like me. While the road to becoming a driver shouldn't be easy for someone with a criminal past, I do believe with hard work, it should be possible.
I wouldn't have my job now had I listened to all of the people that told me I'd never get hired driving OTR. I'm not that far away from having a year's experience under my belt. Oh, and just got my first raise.
One thing is true for the OP... Getting a job is going to be difficult, and will seem impossible sometimes. All you need is for one company/person to give you an opportunity. The statistics is what got me to take the chance to go to school w/ my record. Out of 500k trucking companies, I just needed one to give me an opportunity. Once you find that one company, it's up to you to take advantage of it, and get experience. Everything else should come second to getting experience. Experience will help put distance between you, and your past. -
If you can find a company that will hire you, I would make sure to stay with them for at least a year or two. If they treat you well then I would probably stay much longer.
