FEMA loads - reasonable daily rates?

I think you're missing something. The haul rate should be 3-4 per mile to staging area, plus 600-1000 per day, after the first 8 hours.

 

Yeah I missed that one for sure. It was discusssed but never anything put in the contract. Broker was on the up and up I'm sure we could have worked something out after the fact had there been a huge delay. Maybe that rate was just a lucky deal... There was another independant truck there doing the same rate/load to the same place. They did 5 of them that night.. Makes me think $3-$4 a mile is cheap but maybe I just got jaded on that one and I'll miss out on lots more cause I'm too friggin high... ..wouldn't be the first time

 

Nobody is price gouging anyone. You usually bounce out a good ways to find another load, therefore the typical rate of 3-4 per mile is a bit low. I deadheaded from Springfield MA to Ohio after delivering my generators and riding out the storm in my truck in Maybrook NY last year for irene. Compensation for being a rolling warehouse is far from gouging as well. Unless you think I should of sat the 7 days at the air force base for free for Dennis back in 05. Get off your high horse and be happy there are people like us that will actually drive through the storm to get equipment prestaged before it hits the delivery location. BTW, look where I'm from, I have zero sympathy for anyone in the US who dies in a hurricane. There is no reason to be in it in the first place.

 

Emails have been sent for us to get daily rates on top of whatever the load pays plus to be sure and check to make sure the route is even open and a person doesn;t have to drive all over creation to deliver. Northeast is such a cluster even when things are normal I'd have to have one heck of a solid rate plus guaranteed daily pay for delays and somehow I think lots of guys will just look at the rate and roll with it.. Cause that's the rookie mistake I made but it did work out...

 

I didnt even read your post, rollin. Of course the shorter the haul the more revenue it should be. I guess I should have clarified my post on 1000+ mile loads. I turned down 4+ yesterday from FL to NJ. Somebody took it though. Ther's very little detention on the platform side, unless you get there before the forklifts do.

 

I am set up with FEMA not doing anything right now with Sandy and have not done anything in a few years but last time I have worked with FEMA I was billing $90.00 per hour (reefer) for stand bye loads of ice plus rates in the $8-$10 per mile range when running OTR. Everything is paid round trip from where you start to get into position.

Here is how it went down with what the last time I did it I had 3 trucks each picked up a load of ice and drove to the NC coast and sat and waited for 2 days in a holding area. Once needed they drove to where told or tried to get close where they would sit until unloaded and then 2 went back empty (paid) to Charlotte to get two more loads and went back. The third picked up a load for a customer.

Here is the part that sucked obviously the loads paid well but ended up only getting about 80 % of linehaul (they pay on shortest miles) and about 90 % of on stand bye pay and it took about 6 months to get paid.

I would happily do it again but just has not been in the cards.

 

I'm not referring to the instances where the carrier is offered a specific rate or where he takes the 'going' rate. What I'm referring to is the carrier 'quoting' a rate double what the 'going' rate is. I'm sorry but I find it highly offensive to try to 'line my pockets' off of others misfortune.

And as I stated earlier, the money is coming out of 'our' pockets in the 1st place!!

 

So you would go in for the "normal going rate" and just take it in the back side coming out empty because there is no freight to haul back out?

 

I guess I would because I have compassionfor people whose lives have been turned upside down through no fault of their own!! It's also why Hubby and I live on our truck and both drive, we are able to help out friends and family members who need it.
