    Dude,

You're over thinking all this along with some of the suggestions and comments that have been made.

BTW, your 214 is a valuable document. I wouldn't be carrying it around with you 24/7. Put it in a safe place along with your other important papers such as your diplomas, birth certificate etc.

veterans used to get preferential hiring ,way back when.

it was back when alot of people in the management were veterans and we took care of each other.

now almost nobody is,compared to 30 yrs ago.

It's very simple to make copies of a DD214 . I used mine at the DMV to get a Veteran license plate and have veteran marked on my CDL .

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, dude. That is rediculous. I'm not knocking you because you carry your 214 around, but I find it quite amusing. I don't need a peice of paper in my pocket to be proud of my service. I do not ask for, nor seek recognition from civilians for my service, (Unless for Job Preference, etc.) Honestly, civilians have no idea what it means to serve during war, so I really don't care what they think of my service, it's irrelevant. I did what I did. I don't want a cookie for it. I'm still proud, because I learned who I am, and what I am made of.

-Unrelated, and often attributed incorrectly to George Orwell, this quote pretty much explains what service to your country means: "We sleep peacefully in our beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on our behalf." --- One of my all time favorite quotes, no matter who said it.

It's about the Service we can do for our country, not the recognition for it, in my opinion.

I served my country in the U.S. Navy swabbing the deck and getting laid in every port.

Really? you gleaned all of that from my post? Perhaps you have not stood by me on the almost 100 missions I have been on with the Patriot Guard Riders or the dozen times I have volunteered to guard The Traveling Wall. You do not know that my family has served this nation in an unbroken string of every generation stretching all the way back to General John Stark and The Battle of Bennington and was a "plank holder" in the Green Mountain Boys with Ethan Allen. Or that my daughter is at Fort Bragg right now proudly serving. My grandfather landed at Omaha and fought his way across Europe and by the grace of God made it home, was a founding member of my towns VFW and worked a factory job the rest of his life and did not carry his 214 with him to flash around. My father is a past State Commander of the VFW and was "Frozen at Chosen" with the immortal Chesty Puller. My mother is a past State President of the VFW Womens Auxillary and my sister is a current President. I ask no favors for serving my country from one hell hole to another. I served in Grenada and was a Paratrooper and am proud of what I did but do not expect special treatment for it. I guess I could demand respect for strapping on full rattle and throwing myself out a door at 0'dark thirty but the people that matter the most do respect that and everyone else does not matter to me. The poster seemed to be expecting something for serving when he mentioned it. It had nothing to do with how good a driver he is.

DD214 in and of itself doesn't mean squat. I've seen more than a fair share of f*** ups in the Army. I've got no use for Horatio Hornblowers. Self-respect is somethig you make for yourself.

Martee99 I couldn't agree with you more....There is a saying I live by, "If you have to convince me you're something you're claiming to be, than you aren't what you claim you are." You're actions will speak louder than words. While I applaud this man's pride in his service, I have to seriously question the motives of his service. Did he serve to make himself proud and to fulfill what he thought was his obligation or did he serve so that others would notice his service so he can get an atta boy from everybody?

Unfortunately the "Look at me!!!" type veterans are the face of all veterans, even though they don't represent us. It is actually my pet peeve. I can't go to the bar in my hometown without seeing this one guy I went to high school with who was a cook for two years and then got chaptered for being a ####bag. He is the guy with the OIF hat with the campaign ribbon on it, and the "If you like your freedom, thank a veteran" shirt.

He has since learned my opinion of him, and the fact that he was a chapter. He now keeps his distance....
