Since this can be a critical part of the truck and if you feel it can be a safety issue. Make sure you have all your documentations and notes in line and in writing, with signatures from the mechanic. Even include some info or notes on your daily Pre-Trip/Post Trip Inspection Reports every day. That way if this issue falls back on you by a DOT Inspector or even an accident, it will show that you were trying to be proactive in fixing the problem before it got worse.
This kind of reminds me of an accident some years ago in SoCal that a tanker trailer broke lose from the tractor and the trailer caught fire. I believe I heard that the accident was traced back to a faulty fifth wheel.
