Every person who just willingly decides to "answer a simple question" is setting a dangerous precedence.
Giving government, be it LEO or otherwise, the means to intrude further and further into your daily life.
For every person like SHC, and Windsmith who thinks there is zero harm in it, makes life miserable for everyone else.
It lends credence to government taking more and more from you each day.
Unfortunately, there are more people like those who wish to just roll over and answer the questions than those who would rather limit police and government powers. -

You were over-weight on an axle, so you broke the law, so therefore you get questioned. Not that hard to figure out.....
Now if the officer came up to you while you were sitting in the truckstop and started asking these questions, or while you were taking a leak at the rest-area, then I agree that it's a bit un-needed. But that's not how it happened.
I have come to the realization that you are one of "those" guys who thinks the govt is out to get them, take away all their rights, and take their guns. You said you served in the military and as a BP agent, so you've been in other countries..... how did you like the way those govts operated??? And if you are so worried, move away and don't come back.

That's a good point. I've never been asked any questions by a DOT officer that I felt were inappropriate or intrusive.
I keep my truck legal, my dash clean, and my logbook and documents impeccable.
The two times that I was pulled in for an inspection, there were obvious defects that I hadn't yet been able to repair myself or get repaired (broken lights at the top of the trailer). It was obvious from my log book that I was nowhere near my 11/14/70 on any day since my last restart, so the log pages got a cursory glance and were handed back. I got a couple of questions from the officer of a personal curiosity nature regarding my PC based logging software, which I answered.
Never a hassle, and no citations. Painless.

I highly doubt YOU understand the meaning.... you were asked a question that the officer has every right to ask you, and you chose to not answer it. You could have just replied with the proper answer which was WHEN YOU TOOK YOUR LAST BREAK. Instead, you put on a front to the officer which in turn could have landed you in a Level 1 inspection, and much more crap than you needed.
And I HIGHLY doubt the officer changed topics as you said he/she did...... go back to the lunch counter with your storytime -
My meaning is simple. If a cop asks, "Do you know how fast you were going?", the simple answer is "Yes", nothing more.

Makes sense.... I just didn't see what the point was in refusing to answer the simple question, besides wanting to get into a "my dad can beat up your dad" contest with the officer. The question is easily answered by looking at the drivers logs anyways.
Oh well.... -
