I took my 1099 to H&R Block and filed my taxes, the tax preparer told me that since I didn't pay any taxes that I wouldn't get a return, even though I have more than 25k in deductions, expenses. is that the case?

That "return" people get is actually just a refund of the amount which had been overpaid throughout the year when they gave the government an interest-free short term loan. If you didn't pay anything, you won't get a check from the government. If anything, you will get a bill for taxes owed...and possibly for penalties and interest on what you SHOULD have paid them over the course of the year.

that is necessarily true you can get a return based on rolling avg over a number of years stipulated by a REAL accountant
particularly credits for children or if your earnings dipped in half
consult a real accountant not a bunch of dumb truckers including me

Could be that the driver thought he had a w-2 and was surprised to find out differently.

Could be the driver is single and no other deductions available.

Could be there are kids and they missed them.

Nothing like a part of the story to make a judgement call.

There are some that know and many that don't.

My comment is directed at the fact, that the op, only gives part of a story for many on here to consider.

Just because a person happens to drive a truck, doesn't necessarily mean they don't know anything else outside of truck driving. Many are fully capable of filing their own tax returns, and some even prepare tax filings for others. A few have even been CPA's before changing careers.

If you view truck drivers so poorly...portraying them in such a negative light...why did you decide to drive a truck? What does that say about you?
