The recap is not a DOT required item, so you are correct, you do not have to fill one out, ever.

However, you would be surprised how many drivers I have had to put out of service on their 60/70 rule just because they did not keep a recap and had no idea how many hours they had.

    Toomanybikes and Meltom Thank this.

This is the reason their are elogs. Too many unprofessional drivers, well that and the technology is available.

I'd agree with that, but much like truckers ScaleMasters are very resistant to learning how to read an Elog. I've had drivers go into scales on Off Duty PC, while loaded and attempting to deliver their load and not get shutdown after I've faxed the logs to the scale house. It's a crying shame the things that happen on the road.

Scale master there are actually drivers who are still on an 7/60? And I figured that was the whole point of filling out the recap. To keep track of how many hours you have so you know when you're out.

Looks to me, that the recap has never been a requirement. However, you better still have it anyways. Unless you don't care if you get shut down.
