It's a pumper rear end, there is a pump in that rear carrier. the filter keeps, well the filter does what a filter does to prevent pump failure

Is it just for that particular axle or is it part of the entire rear end (both axles)?

Its just an oil filter for the front drive axle. Nothing special. Change it out once or twice a year.

Yep got one on mine. Change it out every year when you change out your rear end oil.

I'm confused, you say not the drive axle, but have a picture pointing to a drive axle? If your drive has a filter, it has a pump in it, which was an option for better lube. You usually see them on trucks set up to run heavy, off-road. or other severe duty applications, but I've seen them on regular over the road trucks.
