You will back into some incredibly tight docks to get loaded sometimes.

Oh yeah I have never worked for Melton before but people like to say flatbedders don't back up.. We don't bump docks very much but get used to blindsiding off a busy road into small driveways and backing up into dark warehouses. Your 53ft trailers are even harder to back than 48s .. Best thing just take your time and if it takes 50 times to get out and look, make sure to do it 51 just to be sure.

Melton teaches wrapping the strap hook around the rub rail. Don't let anyone scare you and say it’s not legal. It is legal.

Melton has drivers strap ever 5 feet. That's double the straps of what is legal. Just do it their way. Later you can ease off that and go ever 10 feet.

Melton has you ride in a trainer truck for weeks. Hang in there, this is the worst part of your entire journey. Don't quit. Just do the training and when you're in your own truck that will all be behind you. Try not to bring too much onto the trainer truck. It's his space. This part is just temporary.

Melton pay is low. But just do it for 1 year and then the flatbed world will be open to you. Melton has first rate securement training and you'll know how to secure 90% of all day to day flatbed freight. You will be hired anywhere after 1 year at Melton.

Melton has driver facing cameras. That's just another thing to get through and you can move on after your 1 year. You next company won't have that.

I spoke with cotc and smokey point they both said they would hire me with no exp,but I am a veteran.(Nothing heroic, just a navy machinest)I went with Melton for the training. Not that I plan to leave. They also have one of the shorter trainer times at 3 weeks. My understanding is their trainers actually train. The whole time trainer is in passenger seat.they don't run as a team truck.

Nothing exciting happened on Thursday.Just more securement training and checking of our logs. They take paper logs very serious. You keep them for each day of training and also when your out with your trainer.Funny story, heard one of the guys mention the old guy.as I was looking around for him I realized he meant me.in my mind I am still 20s.most of the dudes here are late 20s early 30s

There are also places where you back/pull into a dock cut out of the conrete with literally a couple of inches of clearance on each side, those are fun. You can see where the insides have been scraped completely to **** by someone else's lug nuts and dot bumper

James j and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

That is true, and once you get in your own truck, the learning continues. Their driver support is great. If you have any questions about securement, take a picture and send it in. Take advantage of that, they will be happy to answer any questions you may have, and they may answer a few you didn't even know you had.

Well we got out badges today, unless we do something stupid we shouldn't be sent home.next big hurdle will be not being sent home from trainers truck.Today was just more securement training and one lap around training course. Its just a big figure 8 with 2 stop signs in the center.and 3 backing stations..straight back, 90 and 45.we also received our first installment of orientation pay.
