Yeah, that is 100% depending on your area. In my area it's the opposite. Not a single OTR company can come close to the local wages and benefits package. With all the jobs with great pay and benefits I'd never even consider going OTR.

And I usually work 8 hours a day. Can't remember the last time time I had to fill out a grid for working 12 hours.

    Just depends on your location.

I'd like to give a huge thanks to everyone that took the time to provide me with some useful information, it's greatly appreciated. I will keep my options open for the next couple of weeks as I only have a week and a half left before I'm done with CDL school. I plan to start applying and knocking on doors next week as my graduation date is on the 8th. I figure that will give me the opportunity to start feeling out different carriers and possibly put me in a better position to have a job quickly after I'm done with school.

My honest opinion is don't go OTR if you have a baby on the way. In your mind you're providing for your family. In your wife's mind you abandoned the family. Finding a local job might be hard but it's definitely worth pounding the pavement for.

Yes I've had very conflicting thoughts regarding this current situation. I'm not up for the idea of going full OTR due to my situation, hence why my so called "back-up plan" if a local gig didn't pan out was going to be some type of regional or dedicated work that would allow me some home time every week. I definitely plan to do my due diligence over the next week or so and really try to connect with the right folks around here that will give me a shot.

I know I can drive given the opportunity, but getting that "chance" local right out of CDL school is easier said than done. But I'm up for the challenge of finding my spot around here locally. If all else fails I'll just try to find the best carrier possible that has a regional or dedicated run in my area, and I've been preparing my wife for such a scenario. At least that's the "plan" and we all know not all plans go accordingly, so I'm keeping an open mind. That's why I took a shot in the dark and posted my situation here on the forum. I'm pretty proficient at researching and finding answers on my own, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to get some insight from those that have a lot more experience than I.
