Can someone please tell me what being on the extra board at FedEx entails? Ive got a general idea but hoping someone can give details. The facility in Buffalo,NY is small with 13 Road drivers at the moments and in need of two more. I’m guessing i’ll be on the extra board for awhile with it being a small facility and all?

Extra board drivers are fill in drivers. If someone has the day off/calls in or if they have extra trailers that need to move the extra board would cover those runs. Its all based on seniority, if you have 5 people on the extra board. Number 1 gets first choice, then 2 and so on. If they have 5 extra drivers and only 4 runs, number 5 doesnt run. Bottom of the extra board can be very feast or famine at times. When you start, when things are going good be putting money in the bank. Because things will slow down. Especially in the NE with weather in the winter.

Small centers are more of a family feel. But with limited drivers retiring/quitting, its hard to move up the board. Big centers have a lot more people and more opportunities to move up. Being in the NE you will probably have other centers close by and opportunitys to transfer if you choose too. Thats what i did i started at a center with 6 road drivers and transferred to a center with 70+ road drivers. And they run Am/pm/hub, in 4 years i have 10 people under me. And thats with not transferring people to the road for 2 1/2 years due to the election year and the covid bs. Id probably have more people under me without that stuff. Especially covid things got bad for a bit.

Thank you Hawkeye. I will admit, I didn’t realize there was multiple people on the extraboard, but it makes sense. I’m a tad nervous i’ll be stuck doing long days on the dock for a few years or more, with minimal to no driving. Saving money isn’t an issue with me, im quite the packrat lol. I’m going to keep my head up here and be positive! Afterall, even dockwork pays more then I could have ever dreamed of making. I really enjoy driving truck tho, so I hope I can get some senority within a reasonable amount of time. Drug test finally cleared today and on to the final review process.

I hope i’m not comming off as ignorant, I do realize I need to put my time in. Just trying to gauge how long that could take.Btw Ive been told by the hiring manager at the facility that if i’m willing to do dock work, i’ll get my 40 hours in during the slow times no matter what! I hope that holds true. By the way, right now my house is between two small facilities.. Erie Pa and Buffalo NY

I did the apprentice program in 2018 i had the same questions and concerns. I will say if they wanted someone to work the dock constantly they would hire a dock worker and pay them less money. Im pretty sure my center pays about $5 less a hour for dock workers than driver. If they hire 1 or 2 more people to go threw the apprentice program that will be below you in seniority. Your going to be in a really good spot with only 13 drivers right now.

Silly question, do I gain senority while training and waiting for a trainer? If not then there is a really good chance they will find someone before I get on the board. It’s why im trying my hardest to move this application process as fast as I can. That and my current job is alot more heavy road construction then I thought when I took the job. Im getting worked like a rented mule for slave wages and told I should appreciate it!
They also bs’d me on the pay scale, and if I stay here ill be working poor for many years. I could go on and on but I have to get out of here before I go bust!

To be honest, there is a real chance that they might only need one person on the extra board if they only have 13 drivers.

No, your seniority starts after you complete training and start driving solo.
