Good thread. Sounds like a decent school. I might give them a try. I like that they seem to be giving you lots of time around the track to take care of your weaknesses in addition to OTR time.. In my time in school I was great at upshifting but I needed more work with downshifting and the dreaded bump 'n run. Also my backing could have used more work. Though I passed the school I was far from confident at these and definitely needed more instruction. If I do it all over again, I'll definitely be doing whatever I can to master those weaknesses and insisting that I feel as if I am competent with them.

    Best of luck, vmaggs!!

Personally, I don't endorse running outlaw. I prefer running legal with reasonable miles at a higher starting cpm in a truck governed # 65mph. Which is why I'm where I'm at. But there always has and always will be a % of drivers that wanna push the envelope running 3k+ per week with the pedal to the metal. Nothing new here. I made .26 cpm for the 11,500 miles we ran the 4 weeks I was out with my trainer for ALL miles the truck ran(which was about 80-85% me). And jumped to .30cpm immediately upon going solo. I escalate to .32cpm at 60k miles, .34cpm at 90k miles, and .36cpm at 120k miles. And the 11,500 miles ran in training DO count towards these upgrades. These #s stack up favorably to any other company hiring student graduates. Letting the truck exceed 70mph on a downgrade is considered over-speed and letting the truck reach 75mph can and probably will result in termination. Big Brother is alive and well at Con-way but it's purpose is to insure safe operation of the equipment I've been entrusted with which is fine with me.

Ok, lets nip this in the bud. I dont want anyone getting the wrong impression here. I take xls' comment the way I believe he meant it. Windy Hill does not have a Big Brother apparatus in place and that is what appeals to me. Cooking books, comic books whatever, I take it as a little poetic license to make a response interesting which xls is very good at doing, hence why I have been following him since he started his training. TrashTrucker I appreciate your concern but I'm a family man with alot at stake with this career change and I would never jeopardize my families well being or anyone elses on the road while trying to just to make a few extra bucks. Lets all be safe in our travels.

After a great day on the road and a successful Mid-Term test the news about Joplin, Mo took the wind out of my sails. To all of Joplin and the Conway family my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Took my CDL pre-trip test this morning and passed with ease. Instructors were busy testing out the B class so no road time today:biggrin_25510:. Spent half a day trying to get the parallel parking down, a bit shakey but I can finally do it from both approaches. When we took the Mid- Terms yesterday I scored a 320 out of 350:biggrin_25515:, 280 is a fail. Was hit on a few minor details ,cab not straight ,bumber off dock etc...will try to ace it next week but it did prove that I have made excellent progress for 12 days of instruction.

Down to 5 now , Toby had to start his new job with Georgia Power so naturally that trumped finishing the class. They're going to get him his license through their onsight program.

So far, so good, can't wait to test out next week and then get our CDL's on June 6. That's going to be a short week of only two days of class, then back the following week and start our daily road trips.

Had a good day today. More practice in the morning and a short road trip in the afternoon. It was short but learned alot . Had us driving in industrial parks with lots of stops and turns then into town and through construction and school zones. It seemed like what I think the CDL driving test would be like. Missed a few down shifts but over all improving day by day, have to keep confidence in check. Had to take it down a knotch after we took off, started shifting like Billy Bad ### Trucker and thats when the grinding started:biggrin_2552:. Ate some humble pie and ended with a decent training session.

Got back to the range and continued to practice on my parallel parking, just when I think I've got it mastered I screw it up on the next try:biggrin_25512: . Still have next week to tie it all together, shouldn't be to hard.

The "B" class finally graduated and the "A" class ahead of us graduates tomorrow:wav: , well done and good luck with your trucking careers!!

You guys are a rough crowd...:biggrin_25511:, oh well if no ones listening I will still finish what I started. Practiced all day and hit the road in the afternoon. This time we were maneuvering through the rush our traffic. I took over the second leg and got to traverse all of International Drive. Lots of tourists, narrow winding lanes and stop lights. Instructor said I did better but have to chill and not get so ####y........:biggrin_25525:guilty. He's right but I was able to get a small acknowlegment that my shifting was better than last outting.

Pulled in to the range, could tell everyone was ready to wrap it up for a four day weekend. Didn't even un-couple the trucks, we were out of there at 5.

Hope everone has a safe Memorial Day weekend, later.

Keep up the good work and keep on posting. You'd be surprised how many people actually view these threads that never post at all. I was roomed with one at Crowder.

vmaggs, How's it going? I wish you well. Seems like you made a great choice because Mid Florida Tech seems to be one of the ones who do it right with something like a eight week course from what I understand. Ideally I'd love to be able to go to them. We'll see.

Everything is looking good. Started practicing first thing this morning for the final and sure enough I was the first one picked:biggrin_25521:, tried acing it but once I started I just wanted to get it over and ended with a respectable 325 of 350...:yes2557:

Hit the road right after the test and had a solid 1 1/2hrs city and hwy. Drove thru Downtown Orlando (narrow lanes) but it was all good, brought it on home for a late lunch. When we got back the class was down to 4. Our struggling classmate just could not put it together for the final.I heard she will be rolled back to the next "B" class which is cool, she really gave it a good shot.

flyguy, if you can handle the not working 8 weeks go for it. Stop on by Tues for the orientation and feel free to pm me with any questions. For the money its a great deal and you will learn alot.
