    Hey There!

Well, of course we don't have school on Fridays so not much to tell you about that, but I spent a good portion of the day "working on my future". Here's what happened....

Linda had an auction to conduct first thing in the morning, so I went and helped her do that, so we didn't get back until after lunch. But her and I had a ball! Got everything sold and even made a little money. So I made her buy me lunch..... hehehehehe

I had been talking to the wife of a USX driver who had been there for about 7 months and she gave me his cellphone #, so I was able to talk to him for quite some time yesterday. He told me that he was quite happy with the company and although he wasn't getting a lot of miles right now, he was getting enough to pay the bills. Also told me that he had a good dispatcher / FM and they were doing everything they could to make it work for him. He was happy with his loads, paychecks, truck, and overall performance of the company.

So I called Chris at USX just to touch base and keep my name in the mix. He informed me that they had a hiring freeze on hiring in the SouthEast, but to get back in touch with him in February, which is not really a problem being as I don't graduate until the end of January anyway.

Spoke with Glenda at Willis Shaw and they were still working my application, but not to worry. Everything looked good and there shouldn't be a problem.

Spoke with Christine at Conway and got my pre-hire from her. She also scheduled me for orientation on Feb 9th in Joplin. She said she would be back in touch with me to do the formal interview next week because of a 30 day time constraint policy and it was too early (by one day). So that is one I was looking strongly to get. Big relief.

Talked to Adam at Star (TN) and got the answers that I was looking for. He was very straight up and didn't sugar-coat anything (which I liked). He said that right now his drivers are averaging about 1800 / wk. I asked him if that was the season or what, and he said that normally his drivers get around 2800 but it all depends on how the economy goes. I did go ahead and shoot him an application (why not?) and he said I should hear back from him next week.

Talked to Thomas at KLLM (spoken with him a few times already), and he told me to go ahead and shoot him an application (now that I have completed my 1st week in school) and I should expect to hear back from him next week.

Everything is pretty much done (paperwork-wise) with TMC. Phil had told me to fax him a copy of the DOT Long Form. Shot that over to him and should hear from him next week as well.

Other than that, I really didn't do much..... ehehehehe

Now, it is Saturday morning and I am sitting here in my jammies, taking a deep breath. What a week! Can't wait for Monday to come around. I was told Thursday afternoon that I should expect some time behind the wheel next week and I should be scheduled to test for my pre-trip and and backing exercises. Then once I get that out of the way, I can concentrate on becoming a "Big Truck Truck Driver"!

    More to come....

I almost went to that school before finding one close to me (and much cheaper, but they don't "put you up" like yours does). Sounds very similar to my experience. One word though is to keep an eye on that student/teacher ratio. In order to finish in the 4 weeks you need exactly 2 other students in the truck for the OBS/Drving hours to work out 2 to 1. With 3 others you'll get 60 OBS hours to your 20 driving. It was like this at our school and hardly anyone finished in under 5 weeks because of it. That extra 20 hours is more like 3 to 4 more days when you include the extra pre-trips and class breaks while they're organizing.

Anyway, I did the math early on and spoke up politely, and they were good enough to drive me out for 6 hours straight on a saturday before the OBS hours got too ridiculous. Just a tip :biggrin_25525:

Appreciate the info. Yeah, that was a concern for me as well, but I was the only one that started last week, so there will be a bunch testing out this week, and then there will be me and a few others. I talked to the Lead Instructor and he told me I will have no problems getting my BTW time in or my OBS time. As it stands, I already have 20 hours OBS and this was only the first week.....

    Thanks for the heads-up!

    Hey Bud -

Yeah, I pride myself in quick decisive actions and statements (and quick DEFENSIVE actions and statements as well) hehehehehhee

Linda read your post and sorta threw up her hands.... she has found that sometimes it is easier to go that route..... but she left the room laughing rather hard. I guess sometimes I can be a challenge......

I'm just wondering now whether or not you are promoting her whapping me! It's not like she needs any encouragement..... hehehehehehe

    Thank ya Man!

I thoroughly enjoy sharing the experience with ya'll and I hope that it helps some others "get ready to be a Big Truck Truck Driver". After all of the information that everyone has shared with me regarding the in's and out's of trucking and all of the advice given, it's the least I can do.

Besides, the first person who was willing to "really" talk to me told me that one day I need to share my experiences and "wisdom" with others coming up in the ranks. Although I am FAR FROM EXPERIENCED (and have a lot more to learn), at least I may have a little something to offer to future wannabes. Come HeII or High Water, I will NEVER let my "first trucking buddy" down.

And I am glad you are enjoying it too.

And if you ever need a co.... you just pick up the phone! Could you imagine? Oh boy! I would bet there are certain laws and ordinances prohibiting that much fun! Plus, we might need to check with Linda.... hehehehehe

    Hey Scooterdawg,

I'm glad to hear that your surely enjoying the experience. Hopefully I will be able to start class. Got a phone call yesterday from the school coordinator saying that he talked with Michigan Works office and that she would have a answer for him on Monday as to when I can start.

Like I told him he is the one getting 4600 dollars for this program and I could care less if I go to their school or a different one. After all the mess that I had to go through to stay with their school and all the mess he caused with my case manager, that maybe he should cut me a check for a couple of hundred for my troubles.

Not much going on here today, just out moving some of the white stuff with the little one, he's 6 and loves this snow weather, the more the better he thinks. Took him sledding early and he really enjoyed it. Now looking out the window and it's still coming down and will have to be done again I'm sure.

My wife has lived in Michigan all her life and hates the cold. So I guess opposite do extract. I have a 19 year old that hates the cold and a 6 year old that loves it. I know for sure that going on the road it probably going to be the hardest on him. I was in the Military with the other one so he was pretty use to me not being home all the time, and working heavy equipment required me to travel from time to time, last year I was in Newton, Iowa for 6 Months.

Go out of town for 3 to 4 weeks and come home for 1 week and then back out. like I told my wife, we will all have to get use to it again. And let them know that I'm doing this for my family and pay the bill's. I tell my little one that Bill is the most important person in the world.

Thanks for the post and updates, wish you luck on monday. I already have my DOT card, and TIP before I ever go to school so I don't have to worry about all those test, took them all in one day, and got all my endorsement. So why everyone else is worrying about the test at SOS, I will be doing other things.

    Hey Andyjk9,

Glad to hear that everything is going well with you and yours up there in the U.P Atleast you are use to driving in this white stuff. Unless you are like alot of these Michigan drivers, grown up here all there life, and some of them act like they don't even know how to drive in it.

Driving as fast as hell, because they have big SUV, trucks like me and then forget that going is the easy part, stopping it the hard part, then off the road they go, and I don't feel sorry for them.

Have you decided on any company yet? Mine is still a toss up between Arrow, heard that Steven's has a hiring freeze, so either Arrow, melton, millis, or acouple of reefer companies.

Would like to find something local but that is getting real tuff here in Michigan, my buddy that use to haul the heavy equipment for me went to hauling grain and supplies to Canada due to not enough work to keep his family feed. Have not talked with my other friend Greg, he use to haul the recycled steel in double's for us, he had to return trailer's and don't know what he is doing at this point.

Hopefully, this economy will start to turn around soon, and the price of steel will go back up and hopefully put us back to work sooner than later. The price of steel in the Summer was a little under 600 dollars a Net ton, now it about 90 if that on somedays. Glad to know that your still fighting the fight.

    Jack
