Hopefully not a stupid question. Who do y'all use to find good rates? I've been on a couple boards but I don't know how to tell if a posted rate is good or not. Are there any good places to look up rates that y'all recommend? Are there any free ones? Thanks!

Well how much does it cost you to run the truck? Once you figure that out, you will understand what rate is good for you and what not

Yeah I guess I've got to get a better handle on that too. I just knew this one one of the areas I had to figure out so just wanted to get some advice.

If you don’t know what it costs you to run your equipment, Sorry to say….. you will not last in this business. By your post…… you must be new. Use the search feature above to help you out. This is a competitive business and most of us don’t spread the good word around about “certain” things. You’ll understand as you go along if you last. Btw, it’s a tough market right now.

Point taken. I'm definitely new and have a lot to learn. Just trying to figure out all the moving parts so I don't make mistakes. I'll do some more searching on the forums. Appreciate the advice.

Seems like everything out there has a price tag tied to it. Didn't know if there were any low cost/free tools to help.

Definitely need to know your cost. If it works for you then it's a good rate.

A good little trick that will help you here and there is to call other carriers to quote a comparable job that you make up the details for. This can give you a better idea of wiggle room to make sure you aren't selling yourself short

Make friends with brokers and other carriers. There's a definitely a scarcity mentality but the reality is, it's mostly relationships and making "allies"

There is no such thing as a rate that is good to everyone. To me a good rate is one that covers your cost and allows for a reasonable profit. What is good to me might be crap to someone else.

From the post you have started with, basically says inexperienced. So what can you do to get some basic information and knowledge.

First, look to the state trucking association for the state the company is headquartered in. They are supposed to be advocates for the trucking industry. Part of what they should be doing is to help people understand the industry and education on operating a trucking company.

OOIDA has a number of educational programs along the same lines. They even have some basic tools, like spreadsheets to track operations cost. You can join them for $25.00 and get access to all the resources and information they have.
