I retired on the last day of 2002. I had the most comfortable wagon to drive at that time since the start of my career, the best vision, the best suspension and, within the confines of European legislation, the most spacious cab and sleeping compartment. And yes, I had cruise control and embraced it as a useful tool although in the back of my mind I had a slight niggle that it could be misused.
But, I am filled with horror at what I am reading here. That a machine could take over completely and override the skills and experience accumulated over 40 odd years. The thought that I am driving along with the most basic aid engaged, the availability to not have one foot pressed to the floor for hour after hour, but while nevertheless staying alert to speed, distance, weather, road condition etc. and the price of which is to trust that knowledge, not to my own skill, but to a robotic machine which could have a hissy fit and turn me upside down in an instant.
No thanks, I am happy to leave that to you younger fellows, but in my now limited journeys in the car, I will be even more careful in my treatment of the awful machines sharing my space.![]()

I’m still unable to find a trucking job. Every company that I’ve spoken with wants another 6-9 months of experience before they’ll hire me.
