Head to the west Texas oilfield, there is always a plethora of companies hiring truck drivers.

This is sad but true. If I was the boss I would have thanked the guy for his honesty and proceeded with some extra training and left it at that, but I guess the big megas don't work that way.

There are 2 problems- the first being he already had at least one incident and probably more. Incidents don't scale linearly, they go up exponentially. Minor stuff can be the last straw.

The bigger problem is what happens when the customer comes back with "you damaged our wall, pay us two boat loads of money to fix it"? If the incident is reported in real time, customers tend to be more chill. When the customer notices the damage the next day, then spends two hours skimming through security footage they're going to be pretty cranky by the time they talk to someone at the carrier.

I've posted before about our guy who trenched the heck out of a customers lawn with his steers. If he'd owned up to it at the time it would have been no big deal. Yeah, we still would have paid out the same amount, but by trying to hide it we went from having the Driver Manager, a Safety Critter and the Consignee being involved, to having the DM, the Safety Critter Manager, the Account Manager, the Consignee's loss prevention team, and the Shipper and his management team. 3-5 people can come up with a reasonable response. 15 people across 3 companies means someone is getting fired.

Did he just call Western Express or submit an application? We've learned on this forum that phone calls don't usually work.

I've made almost every mistake you can make driving. The mistake was damaging your truck not reporting the damage in the wrong way.

    77fib77 Thanks this.

They are called, "spotters"....becuz they will (all too often)...."spot"...your driving record.

One takeaway here: when in doubt -- just GET OUT....& LOOK.

Getting out & looking...as much as is necessary....is FAR EASIER THAN LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB. o_O
