I strongly disagree with you.......Miami is the worst for dump buckets. In 1981 when Castro emptied his prisons and sent all those refugees across the water to Florida during the Mariel boat lift it seemed like every Cuban in Miami drove a dump truck. Over the years they've graduated to container hauling.

Why does trucking always have to turn into a competition? We should have a show on T.V., Right after American Idol called, "Americas next best Trucker"

Now 10years driving, you started in 2001? You have a long way to go. Between Rock haulers, and Freight haulers, who`s a Safer driver? BY FAR, freight haulers. I`ll give you an example, UPS, Conway, ABF, USF Holland, and any of the Yellow, RoadWay,drivers, FED/EX, and many more are by far MUCH better drivers. Every one of the freight haulers can get a job as a Rock Hauler. But a Rock Hauler can never get a Great paying job as a Freight hauler. Because Freight Haulers, are much safer. When we stop our trucks, We dont have every freakin tire locked up.
I know everything there is in the Rock hauler industry, My brother drove one for 30 years. Im a Freight Hauler, we haul our own products, Pharmaceutical, for almost 38 years.

About 10 years ago Indiana border, and Illinois, a Swift truck was in front, a mini van was behind, and a Rock Hauler was behind the Mini van. There was about 2 feet of the Mini Van showing, the rest was under the ICC bar of the Swift truck. The Freakin Dumb ARSE rock hauler did not want the mini van to cut in front of him, so he got right on the arse of the mini van. Well Swift stopped suddenly, and the Dumb Arse rock hauler slammed into the back of the mini van KILLING EVERYONE, I looked at the Rock Hauler, outside walking around in circles HOLDING his hands on both sides of his head, Realizing, he just KILLED people in the mini van. I see this attitude of Rock haulers every day. I say the exact same thing to my brother. :biggrin_25513:

Im sitting here, watching T.V and on my laptop. News broadcast, another Truck Driver goes around the Train crossing gates, AMTRAK hits him and KILLS him. Another one happen just awhile ago.

    Here is the link.

I am hearing this atleast once a week, these rock haulers are Just Plain DUMB.

I had front row seats, about a year ago, 130th Street on the South Side of Chicago, this Garbage hauler, TRIED to go around a TRAIN, and acually saw the Train hit the back of the Garbage hauler, and spin him half way around, putting Garbage everywhere.

Well I dont think thats a fair stereotype, Ive seen plenty of horrid mail, ups, fed ex drivers. And a lot of them are freakin rude jerks, same goes for some freight haulers. Im sure there are plenty of good rock/log haulers...

I've seen freight haulers do some pretty dumb stuff, too. There are a LOT of dumps running around this area...4 rock quarries, 2 lime kilns, 8 coal mines, and countless grain elevators....all within about an hour from here. Probably 9 out of 10 trucks I see in this area are dumps...but if a wreck makes the news, most of the time it's a freight hauler either turned over on one of these narrow back roads or crashed out going into the construction zone on the interstate.

When I venture out on the road, the things I see freight haulers do, from running balls-out any time the speed limit is reduced I guess trying to make up for the time spent running below the speed limit at your governed speed...not to mention, the inability to follow the laws established by the state they are passing through (namely KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS) or flying down Monteagle with their brakes smoking because they are in the wrong gear, loaded heavy, and don't have sense enough to slow down. Just this week, I saw a Swift freight hauler who had to use a runaway truck ramp and an Arnold freight hauler who dang near caused a wreck running right up to the back end of a parking lot because his brakes were already smoking hard and he needed to slow down near the bottom because traffic was bottlenecking where the right lane ended.

So yeah, you've got your "examples" and I've got mine. It's all just anecdotal anyway, and doesn't mean much of anything. However, given where dumps operate vs. where freight haulers operate, it takes a LOT more skill to keep from tearing up your equipment when you spend a lot of time navigating tight places with questionable traction as opposed to setting the cruise and maintaining your lane when the road is straight and the lanes are wide.

But yeah, a rock hauler may have difficulty getting a job as a freight hauler...but it has nothing to do with the vehicles or ability to drive it. Freight hauler companies want OTR experience...and RECENT OTR experience. You can be a freight hauler for 20 years, get a local rock hauling job for 2 years, and freight hauling companies will treat you as though you've never been OTR. They want 2 years experience inside the last 3 years. Has nothing to do with a driver's ability to drive, and everything to do with the perceived ability to live in a box and be treated like dirt.

When are people going to just accept that the ratio of good drivers to jackarse drivers is pretty much even across the industry? Big company vs. independent O/O, union vs. non-union, door-slammer vs. open deck, highway vs. off-road. We all have our dummies and it's right about 10% across the board.

Our O/P asked who might hire him. The fact is, he will have more luck looking to logging/chipper companies or independents than companies that answer to big insurance or subscribe to USIS and send/receive DAC reports.

Put any IDIOT behind the wheel of a truck and you will see some pretty DUMB stuff regardless of what the load is.

Not every ROCK HAULER is a tire smoking thrill seeker just because you see a few do it. I have seen quite a few TANKER accidents , usually involving going off a bridge , does that make all TANKER YANKERS less of a driver , or how about the # of reefer haulers that hit low bridges in Chicago area.
