Not a requirement, but like Poacher said, it's a good idea, and most certainly one of those "better to have and never need it, than to NEED it and not have it" kinda items. But just a s important is the knowledge and ability to use whatever you have in it. JMO.

Make sure you get a kit with a good variety of stuff... When you've got a 2" gash on your wrist, it turns out, bandaids aren't very helpful. The shipper had a well stocked first aid kit for me to raid, fortunately.

    Mudguppy Thanks this.

I carry a lunch box size one. Got it at Walmart in the camping section. Come in handy a lot. Very easy to cut yourself on metal and random objects

Walking between trailers at a drop yard in the middle of nowhere sliced my arm deep an a piece of jagged metal on one of the trailers. Ruined my favorite Tshirt. Stitching myself up in the sleeper was fun too. Anyway, yes on the first aid kit.

TBH, I don't have much use for off the shelf FAKs. I have several different kits that I assemble myself, depending on what I have going on (IE- Range Kit for when blasting some paper targets with the boys, Boat Kit for when 20 miles out deep sea fishing, etc.). Granted, I do have some formal training, but if you're interested enough, not hard to become proficient in day to day use.
My FAK I carry every day on the road is in a nylon case about 10" x 10" x 4" and in it I have supplies to cover everything from boo-boos to a GSW or even a tourniquet for amputations. But then again, I am an old Eagle Scout, so I like to be prepared for as much as possible....YMMV

Did the same thing on a bundle of lumber, sliced my self wide open on a metal strap that was sticking out while I was spreading my tarps. Ruined not only my favorite work shirt, but also my most comfortable pair of shorts and another shirt that I tied around my arm while tarping (no point in stopping to bandage/clean when I still had to finish tarping - it did bleed like a mother####er though).
