It is close to ninety percent of people here who are funded through one program or another with the majority taking the Platinum package which is basically everything that you can think of from dozer to semi. I guess Sudbury is the only TTCC that offers this, helps that the owner of the company started here.
I keep being asked on how good TTCC is as a school and my answer remains I will not really know until I end up in my own truck

Back in the truck again! Everything seems to be coming together, air test part is going smooth, pretrip is going great and the driving is coming along. Need to pay more attention to my mirrors and lane control as I tend to stick to that left line pretty good. Test is in a week.
Right now looking at Schneider and McKevitt as both have good training programs plus are willing to take on new drivers -
Pulled a loaded trailer today, 40,000 pounds and it was definitely a learning curve. Getting use to first and second gears as well as using the half gears was an experience. Only one more lesson in the truck and then the big test the following day.
A couple of new options have appeared on the job front so it will be an interesting few days next week. Whether to go South of the border for a good training program or take on a local job that will have me home every nightflyguy35 Thanks this. -
Just finished week 2 at Transport Training Centre and it was another week of stuffing into our brains. This week was less intense than the previous week put still a lot of info mind you, that could have been do to going over some of the same info from the week before as 4 of the people in my class failed either their A or Z MTO exams. Unfortunately, a couple of people had to rewrite one exam 3 times.
In the first week, we had an instructor from one of the other campuses as the regular instructor was on vacation. Their teaching styles were night and day different with the instructor for week two being the better instructor in my opinion. He presented the material where we had to write down the information rather than write it out by hand. I find this way to be better as the info goes from the tip of the pen to the brain.
On Friday, we finally got to see and walk around of the school trucks. It is surprising that how quickly everything falls into place once you put hands on. We did a complete air brake inspection doing the mark and measure method. After the brake inspection it was time to do the truck pre-trip inspection. The instructor showed us the real world pre-trip versus the MTO inspection where they do not even open the hood of the truck. The process of the pre-trip inspection is certainly more straightforward than the air brake inspection.
I forgot to mention that we did this at the Antrim Truck Stop in Arnprior. The reason for this was so that we could see how to weigh a truck on a CAT scale. Once seeing this, the instructor proceeded to show us how to adjust the tandems for various situations. He told us that we will get more practice on this with our on the road instructor. With the field trip completed, it was back to the campus to write the final exam for the school and again, it was a good exam result for me.
At the end of the day, we were given our schedules for the following week for our in truck training, as well as who our instructor will be. I happy with the instructor that I have, he seems to be a get to the point, no messing around type of guy. Finally we were given that date for the practical exam at Drive Test and mine is September 9th. I am hoping that I can get it moved up so I can get back to work ASAP. -
The pre trip I was told it was a condensed version for the MTO to cut down on how long it takes to do the actual test. As for the wait for the test most of them are pretty booked up and it tend to be quite the wait. Just make sure that TTCC saves hours for you for the last week before the test so everything will be fresh. Funny thing is I drove for a few weeks than did one week of in class then back to the truck for a few days then back to the class for another week then again back to the truck and I found I drove better after being away from the truck for ten days. Guess muscle memory kicked in and took over. As for the tandems and the scale I know how to do both in theory but have not had the chance to actually physically do them.
The instructors I have had are all good and it was interesting to have multiple teachers as they all have their quirks in what makes a solid driver so they look for different things. -
The reason they do not open the hood is one of the examiners got clipped by a hood when the wind blew it down. I have seen my schedule and they are spacing it out so that I have training right up to test day. I hope to get at least one other instructor during my training so that I get other tid bits of info.

Today was my first time behind the wheel of the Freightliner Columbia. I just bobtailed around the school yard to start but as I got better, the instructor took me out to play in traffic. Driving in traffic was a little more intense than driving around the yard. The first time out went as expect but the instructor said that I did very well otherwise he would not have taken me out into traffic so soon. Shifting up the 13 speed was fairly easy but down shifting will certainly will require more work. I am off tomorrow due to doctor appointment but I will be back at it on Thursday, should that trip out prove good enough, I get to pull an empty trailer on Friday.
-
That's great. The funny thing is that it is easier to shift with the trailer on the back. The extra weight makes the tractor a lot more stable. Pretty sure that TTCC policy is to make sure that each student gets more than one instructor as it creates a better learning environment

Well I officially have my ACZ license as I passed the driven this morning and if all of my ducks line up in a row I will be starting orientation at Schneider next Friday in Guelph Ontario. Pretty exciting times
Everything went well on the tests with just two errors both of which can be contributed to nerves. As I have said before TTCC has provided a positive learning environment and obviously taught me enough to pass the road test now I will see how the lessons taught apply out of their yard
