Second day of driving today. The double clutching has improved greatly but there is still a lot of work to do on the down shifting. Tomorrow I get to haul my first trailer, anyone want to guess the over/under on how many times I rub the curb?
-
Just remember to take it slow and watch the mirror. One of my instructors likes to say the curb won't sue you
-
Well I did a lot better than I thought I would, I only rubbed one corner. The set up on a few other corners could have been much better but that will come with practise. The down shifting is 50% better than it was yesterday. So far, I am pleased with how I am doing, I am my harshest critic. Unfortunately others in my class are struggling, especially the lady, she has yet to get out of the yard. She really needs to relax or she will not make it. One of the lads in my class took out a road sign today while taking a corner a little too fast.
I am already looking forward to next week and learning how to back up, as well as going on a road trip as one of my sessions is 6 hours long. I am also hoping that I can get my drive test date moved up so that I am not waiting too long at the end of the course. -
It is interesting to here how driving school was in other TTCC campuses as well as other schools in the Toronto area. Will be interesting on Monday when I can see them operate a ten speed. So far the school has me pretty much prepared in terms of logging, hos, and trip planning. The real education is going to start in ten days when I go with the training engineer

How goes the training/oreienation terry?
-
It has been good. Everyone has been helpful and very friendly. First day out in the truck was today after spending two days doing paperwork, learning how to work the qualcom, trip planning and logging. It is going to take some time to get used to the ten speed but the actual truck drives like a dream compared to what I was practicing on at TTCC. Another person in the class also went to TTCC down south so it was interesting to hear about his experiences. Kind of funny hearing what real drivers think about the Ministry test.
The companies pretrip is pretty thorough and about a hundred more things than what I was taught at in school, the air test is actually much easier as well as the coupling and uncoupling procedures. Right now I wished that TTCC concentrated more on matching the speed to the gears rather than at different rpm levels as that would have been helpful mind you with a different transmission maybe not. Learning to skip gears again would have been good as well.
The trainers know that the driving schools from the good to the bad just prepare people to pass the Ministry test so they are not too surprised with questions us new guys ask. Turns out he had a student who asked him where the brake pedal was ...... and this guy had his AZ. So the rest of the week is half day in the truck and the other half in the class then next week it is otr with a trainerflyguy35 Thanks this. -
Shows likes things are going well Terry. I had a hell of a day in the truck today, I knew there would be days like this so I will just shake it off and do better tomorrow. Right now, my first choice is Kriska and I am schedule to do a road test with them on September 10 and all goes well, I'll be in Orientation on September 14. Second choice is Schnieder and I am schedule for an intake/orienation with them on September 18 if I do not get on with Kriska.

There are a couple of people in my class who have been waiting months, not sure why as Schneider always have classes and orientation going, and they are basically starting from scratch again. Basically you have two and a half days in the truck then you go OTR with a trainer. Schneider policy is if you do not feel comfortable you can do another week here before going OTR with the trainer. There really was no surprises during the first day, the physical is posted on YouTube and was not difficult, drug testing was both urine and hair and the rest was just paperwork. I forgot a bunch of stuff at home and am still waiting for a couple of things to come in (FAST card and diploma for TTCC) what I keep hearing about Schneider from people outside of the company is that their training program is one of the best around which is a huge reason why I decided to come this way instead of finding a company closer to home. Oh they do have a yard in Montreal by the way
How long is the training at Kriska?
Bad days in the truck during training happen for whatever the reason. Muscle memory does not exist for whatever the reason, the shifter spent the night drinking and can no longer figure out where sixth gear is. Every four wheeler in the area thinks it is race day and the finish line is in front of your truck. Your right just shake it off and tomorrow is a new day -
Well today I passed my Ontario AZ test. That is the first bit of pressure off as tomorrow I head to Prescott to my road test with Kriska and if all goes well I will start orientation on Sept 21.
terryg247 Thanks this.
