Well I just finished training with Schneider and get my truck next Tuesday and hit the road
Keeping this somewhat on topic here are a couple things that I wished I learned in school that would have made my training a bit easier
1) Learning a multiple of backing techniques - Knowing how to back straight up is important however in the real world most of the lots are forty five degrees and a assortment of other varieties
2) An actual full pretrip - I understand that schools goal is to get the driver a license however it was a bit embarrassing when the instructor opened the hood and all I knew what to look for was the governor and air dryer
3) Trip planning - Thankfully I know how to read a map and even more so how to use a GPS but it would have been nice to spend some actual time on how to plan your day from start to finish

There is no doubt the schools just teach you the basic to get through the MTO test. At the Ottawa location, we were taught a couple of different backing options. I was lucky my instructor took the time to teach about doing a proper complete pre-trip, compared to what I learned in the regular training. My instructor even took the time to teach me how to do a drop and hook using the air suspension. A trip planning day during the course would certainly have been helpful but seeing it is not an MTO requirement, I guess they don't bother.
Enjoy the new truck and keep us posted on your adventures and travels. -
I got word this morning that I am officially with Kriska pending the physical and pee test which I have no worries of passing and that I will be in the orientation class starting on the 21st. The safety/examiner person said I did excellent given the amount of training so far. Time to celebrate by cracking open a cold one later today. I look forward to learning as well as getting pointers and advice from everyone on this forum.
