@Gearjammin' Penguin I would thank your post a 1000 times if I could despite you beating me to it.
lol
Good luck to the OP, sounds like your getting more comfortable, hence going better. Stick with it. An important trait to have in life is a stubbroness to not give up, an to keep going. Gotta start on flat ground to make it t the mountain top, as they say..well. I say, not sure about anyone else.
An no I can't resist my own joke...though if your name really is Frank Burns, I'm sure you get plenty of them.
Sirscrapntruckalot - Marriage is probably the chief cause of divorce. - Lt. Frank Burns,of the show, not our OP.Gearjammin' Penguin and Frank Burns Thank this. -

This week we:
Did more pre-trip (which I think I have down)
Took a long road trip and got some highway miles, I got to use the splitter for the first time.
Did a lot of backing. Straight back and off-set back not really a problem, but the parallel parking took me a while to get it. I was terrible at it, got yelled at a lot (chuckle) but when we figured out what my problem was and adjusted I was putting them in pretty well.
My shifting has improved 100% from the first week. I still miss a gear now and then but now know how to recover.
I'm by no means good at driving the truck, but good enough to pass the CDL test I think.
Hated the whole thing at first, almost quit, stuck it out and now I'm actually having a bit of fun.Lonesome, dwells40, Gearjammin' Penguin and 1 other person Thank this. -
Don't stress the pretrip. Just remember that there isnt anything bolted, welded, attached to, screwed on or otherwise bracketed to the truck with a dallop of wire and a prayer thats not not important. Everything on there you can see is important.
Eyes and ears. Thats the key.drivingmissdaisy, dwells40, Frank Burns and 1 other person Thank this. -
I know it sounds stupid but the only thing I forgot on the PT was checking the oil. And the fact that before I left the house I put a paper towel in my pocket to wipe the dipstick and I STILL forgot is funny. We climbed back in the cab and I was like WAIT I forgot to check the oil. He said "we're done with the pretrip, you missed that one." You can't go back during the test. If you miss it, it's done.
Frank Burns and Lonesome Thank this. -
Lol don't feel bad. When I did my test I missed the brakes on the steer wheel. Nerves are a hell of a thing.
Frank Burns Thanks this. -
Tomorrow is the official test day with DOT. I'm nervous about it already. I know the pre-trip, can back the rig and drive it. I just hope I don't choke. Something about being "tested" causes me to forget everything I know.
Sigh...... -
Deep breaths my friend. Just remember on the pretrip: If you miss something, you can always go back to it as long as you haven't said you've completed said pretrip. The only exception to this is your 3 point brake check. It MUST be done in the correct order. Press and hold service brake and state it shouldn't lose more than 4 psi in a minute. Then state your low air warnings should come on before 55 psi as you're fanning the brake. Then your emergency brakes should pop out between 20-40 psi. Also, make sure you have enough pressure in the tanks before you start the check.
Frank Burns and dwells40 Thank this.
