Alright!! So as some know on here who have responded to previous threads, I was getting discouraged about finding a job mainly because I was being picky. I didn't want to go to a huge bottom feeder carrier who wouldn't give a #### one way or another about me or even know who I was. I didn't want to take a nasty greyhound 14 hours for training and I wanted to stay local.... Maybe I was insane!! Lol...
WELL.... Our school about 2 weeks in had a local oil company here in Oklahoma send out the okc yard manager and they were accepting cdl grads. This company is family owned and has arous 70 employees for the 4 yards it has. I sent them my resume online and every couple days I would shoot an email or call about the progress of my application. Was always told it was being reviewed.
I thought because I had a 15mph ticket over 2 years ago that was the reason... Last tues I get a call from the same guy who went to the school and asked if I'd come in for an interview. The interview happened and it seemed as if I was givin the job on the spot... Only 1 problem... Since I was out of school 3 weeks I got lazy and forgot about my endorsements... He seemed as if to say, oh well get them on your off day which is gonna be tues and wed. I was pretty excited that there was a bit of opportunity here and started with them on Friday of this last week.I did
My
drug screen, and background last Thursday and Friday and Saturday I was in the truck... Not able to drive of course but learning how to load up at the rack, unload at the stations and plants and have been enjoying every moment. I start at 26% of the load and they expect to get around 3 to 5 loads a day for you....why do I care? I just got my foot in the door!!
So far Friday and sat I worked 430am to around 330pm and have rode about 1000 miles around Oklahoma. I enjoy the work of loading and unloading, the responsibility of what I'm hauling and knowing that I better read my #### twice and unload and load once.
Only negative... Once while filling up on the first day I held the vapor hose at the rack too far down and the pressure swung the solid metal clamp right to my forehead... A bit of a gash but nothing major... That won't happen again! Anyways I get home every night and it's paying the bills. As soon as I take my tests and get my background back I'll be driving the peterbuilts!
I'll keep Ya informed!
First job!!

Keep in mind there is a reason they are at a school recruiting.
Id be concerned of how much the work load is. What if you only get one run per day? Sure they can tell you 3-5 per day but usually its a guesstimate they have ir wishful thinking. -
Well I was informed it could be slow but everyone so far has had 4 loads a day and I'm guessing winter will be slower.... I will have to live with it and pay my dues.... Can't expect to make 50k first year and willing to earn a better job if need be. It's what you make of it I guess.

Congrats on the first job. Like any job, you definitely learn from the experience (vapor hose issue you discussed). Once you do the job for a while and get paid, you'll get a better idea of whether the job is worth it.

Yea that's right Rick and do far it's enjoyable. The trainer today is good and letting me do it all... Just waitin to drive.

Sounds like you got real lucky. Gasoline doesn't slow up. All it does is change from one company to the other. After all someone got to haul the loads. I recommend that you go to the tanker group and read some of the tips we give about loading and unloading. About the hit on the head- wait until you take a 1203 shower.
You helped reinforce my approach about seeking work. I've been saying for awhile now it's always better to go face to face with a prospective employer than just filling out an on-line application. Even if the company did come to your school do you think you would have had a chance if you just sent them an app? -
Not sure because tey are so small an til thurs I had no clue what the rack was... Info is pouring in and I'm writing everything down... Seems good and yea I def can count my blessings on not having to go otr!!!

Congrats ! My first job was hauling b train tank sets, tanks are really interesting to operate and will instill good driving habits in you from the start. Take your time and stick with the attitude you have now( which too me seems to be a very good attitude!). Work hard and be responsible, earn a reliable reputation and you will go as far as you want. You're off to an excellent start and the experience you gain is priceless. Don't worry about the money, it will get better with time. I started at $15 an hour and by the time I left tank work I was at $25 an hour plus a 10% bonus monthly. Like you said, you won't earn 50k a year straight up but you will earn a nice income once your experience goes up. Well done , I wish you all the best.
