We have used AmeriServe.....so far so good........We like to cross at Alexandria Bay , we have crossed back at Champlain.....as well
-
One thing I will really recommend is when you call the broker to ensure that you are good to cross, ask them for your "Entry #" and in the event that the customs agent is unable to find you in the computer, If you have your Entry # they can find it and get you across.
Coming back to the USA make sure that your shipment control # on your Ace Electronic Manifest is correct.
I dont know if you are the one who handles dealing with brokers, but I have been burned enough times to have learned a couple of pitfalls.
Always make sure you have the Cost of the shipment, Weight of the shipment, and a description of what the load is.
I always list my border crossing ETA as early as reasonably possible, and call early to ensure that my paperwork has arrived and is in order, as well as when I should call back to verify that it has been cleared.
P.S. If you are running an air card for your computer stay off the internet, or even unplug it while you are in Canada or you will be getting hit with an obscenely high bill afterwards....
Verizon=$2/Mb in CanadaLast edited: Nov 18, 2008
Lil Blue Pony and countrycruisers Thank this. -
Yes he is right and I forgot about getting that entry # from the customes broker to have ready when you cross back into the US ...just in case...and yes do not used the net over there unless you are set up ahead of time it is pricey....having to use the cell# over there is bad enough.......

I don't think it's $2/MB, I think it's $20. That's assuming the $0.02/kB. I think Sprint charges $0.03/kB for Canada data roaming ($30/MB)
-
The charges work both ways. I called home from Port Huron, the call was about $1.20, but the roaming charges were about $19.00
-
Either you are mistaken or are getting stroked harder then I am with Verizon!!!
From the Verizon website...
In the Canadian Broadband and Canadian Enhanced Services Rate and Coverage Areas, usage will be charged at a rate of $0.002 per KB or $2.05 per MB.
In the Mexican Enhanced Services Rate and Coverage Area, usage will be charged at a rate of $0.005 per KB or $5.12 per MB.
In the Bermuda, China, Dominican Republic, India and Israel Enhanced Services Rate and Coverage Areas, usage will be charged at a rate of $0.02 per KB or $20.48 per MB. -
You're right, my apologies. Even with Sprint it's $0.002/KB.
But there is one thing I recommend if you're going to be going to Canada often. I know at least Sprint has a Canada add-on. Here's what I took from the site:
You'd have to talk so much in Canada before you saw a savings, but you can also add/remove this add-on whenever you want. I'd just add it before I went in, remove it when I came out, and not have to pay the entire monthly charge for it.
The add-on is worth the 3 dollars/month if you do more than 7 or 8 minutes of talking in Canada, assuming I did my math right.
One more thing... if you were that close to the boarder and your phone went to the Canada tower, give your cell company a call and just say you were in the US and shouldn't have the roaming charges. Most won't hesitate to remove them. I was talking with a driver (or maybe I read it on here, I just can't remember right now) that lived near the boarder and would have to call Alltel after all of his calls at home to make sure it wasn't charged the international rate.Last edited: Nov 18, 2008

Unless I have unusual delays , whenever I go into Canada I spend the night at the Flying J in London , ON . I often stay there after unloading . I subscribe to Flying J WiFi . The annual rate is less than $150 .

Dam. I didnt even think about the roaming charges. Thats another lesson learned the hard way. Thanks for the advise.
