so I’m getting ready to do my first oil change on my 15 prostar with the n13 engine. Right now we are 13k miles in so my question to you all. What is the best oil to use and how much is necessary. I’m the type that likes to do oil changes myself but for the sake of the warranty I know I can’t but I would like to still choose the oil that goes in. Is there any websites that sell oil and filter packages?? Or am I going to have to go to rush trucks to buy a filter.

Read your owners manual. It should tell you exactly what weight of oil is recommended and what standards it needs to meet. As long as whatever oil you buy meets the criteria set out by the manufacturer you should have no issues with warranty.

As for filters, I would go with OEM. That way they can't blame a potential engine failure on a subpar filter.

Use Rotella, that is what the International dealer in my neighborhood uses in all of the trucks that come through their service bay. As far as filters, I know that Baldwin is having issues with the o-rings in the filters pinching and getting sucked into the oil galleys. Myself, if International makes a filter I would use that, next up would be a FleetGuard. Everything else I would avoid.

It would be a good idea to put an auxiliary oil filter on the motor too. The reason you would want to do that is to help in the soot collection, roughly 6 pounds of the stuff winds up in your motor between oil changes. Amsoil makes an inexpensive unit that will work on that motor. That soot just eats away at your bearings, rollers and cam. Nasty stuff, and don't let anyone tell you different, soot/carbon packing is common in these motors, even with SCR.

I would also recommend using a gear oil in the oil. Many of us use Sta-Lube 85W-90 GL5, it has many of the additives that the motor needs that have been stripped out of the oil to meet the new EPA standards. It leaves a nice coating on the bearings and rollers too, I just had my motor apart to in frame it, and you could see the gear oil, it was doing the intended job.

    Hope this helps.

All warranty needs is copies of receipts, times and mileage you performed your oil changes at. They don't require actual dealer invoices. We also use Rotella. Just use a good name brand. Those engines also have the worst dipsticks I have ever seen. There are two notches cut into the sides of the dip stick that appear to be high and low marks. They are not. They are only from the manufacturing process. The cross hatches are your full range. Refill your oil until it is 2/3 or so up the cross hatch, not to the full top because this the point it becomes over full and oil consumption with carbon packing can result. More oil isn't always better.

Would installing a aux filter mess up my warranty though? My truck actually had an inframe done on it probably a year ago before I bought it. I was told it had oil consuming issues which was a recall and they installed new liners and pistons that added an additional scrub ring.

Already had an in frame eh? I would say install it. Soot and carbon kills these motors. Should not affect the warranty. I bet the dealer would install it for you if you are not able to do it yourself.

Thanks I’ll probsbly try and do it with the oil change then. Does Amsoil make a kit specifically for this engine? I did a quick search and couldn’t find anything

It's a universal kit. You may have to build your own oil lines to hook up to the motor. Amsoil sells most of the parts and pieces you will need to do a clean install.

Appreciate it. So they have an 120,000 mile extended service interval. How should I go about replacing the filter on this unit. Should it be done with every oil change as well?
