I agree it doesn’t get any “easier” especially if you’re moving up in size. Everything gets bigger. Securement, tarps, ect all get bigger.
What does get better, or what should get better, is your technique. You know how to do the things in your sleep that you struggled with at first. You get a rythem or a process.
Think about the first time you went to chain a complicated load down. You probably made 20 trips around the trailer trying to figure out where to put Chains. After awhile it will come second nature.
First oversize.

I forgot to mention the other day when the steerable perimeters where getting put together I got to see one in action. I left behind another gentleman and caught up to him before he got on road.... seeing all that, it was pretty cool thing to watch.
Gotta get my passport card when I get home.
I had the book but... hanging out getting drunk with friends one night packing up stuff to exit the oilfield I misplaced it. So yeah. Gotta get that so I can maybe experience driving in Canada.
Met most of our owner operators the other night, We only have a handful. That got the good idea fairy working. Maybe get a truck and hook up with these guys like these dudes are doing. Nah. Had to put that idea down quick.
So for now we’re hanging out in Ohio, waiting on Monday to find something headed home.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Don't put that O/O idea too far away. Reading between the lines of what you have posted so far, I think you will eventually want to take that step. Keep learning EVERYTHING you can to prepare.SavageMuffin Thanks this.

To say I haven’t considered it would be a lie. Before this it was reefer and some oilfield. Was pretty set on doing it before I got into this.
Set up an LLC, business account etc. Back pedaled. Decided to give something new a try and definitely didn’t want to dive into this new world responsible for more than I felt I could handle.
Honestly though, I have it pretty good as a company man here. I feel like my wage is good and I got benefits etc.
The money isn’t much of a motivator really. I mean yeah, our O/Os make some good $$$ from what I’ve seen but for me it'd be more about freedom.
The freedom to say yeah I’m doing this, no, I’m not doing that. Oh there’s nothing here heading home? Screw it, I’ll bobtail. The living and dying by your own choices. That is more of a motivation than money. Yeah, money is good, but at the same time, how many people jump into driving in general and lose their shirt? A lot.
So, for now, I’m perfectly content on learning everything I can about what I’m doing, putting some money aside, learning more about business and all that. Letting the wife finish school, then... maybe... maybe we’ll ride that train.back street slider, Lepton1, Feedman and 1 other person Thank this. -
Great thread. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. This is something I've wanted to do for awhile and just haven't left my comfort zone to get into it. I'm to the point now though that I'm tired of the mundane normal trucking and I'm looking for more challenges. My first step will be just getting back into open deck after pulling box trailers for 12 years. That's where I'll start and work my way up like you've done.

I’ve been driving for... idk almost 5 years I think and it’s honestly the most enjoyable in my opinion.
I was nervous ( I still am most days lol ) but you just gotta decide to take that step. I got hired, spent 2 weeks working securement and off I went... did general freight for idk a month and the second time I asked my dispatcher about oversize he put me on a 10 wide plate. Big enough to be oversize but small enough to not be overwhelmed.
In my opinion, the #1 thing was mentioned by @TripleSix . Read your permits and have the provision sheets for each state.
Ask questions. Listen. Watch. Same things we all do when starting out.
Aside from that it’s all about getting used to being bigger. Wide, tall, long. Remembering you’re bigger. When longer, take ALLLLLLL available space.
I would probably never go back to door swinging.

Delivered those the other day.

Found my passport. Which means I can now go to Canada. So, hopefully in the near future I’ll get to experience that.
