My first load was a '87 cat D3 dozer. Second load was a 200 komatsu long reach excavator, 10'6" wide with about 6' rear overhang on a 51' RNG.

I only had about 5 oversize loads (and many more merely overweight loads). So I am a novice to that compared to most of you.

Everyone is right about reading rules and the permit. Getting ready, securing flags etc.

For me, the number one thing I do while driving is CONSTANTLY REMIND MYSELF THAT I AM OVERSIZE. "YOU ARE OVERSIZE" ... repeat

I have a quarterly OSOW permit from Illinois. I can just hop in the truck and go, but only on legal roads.

Made this post the other day, changed my mind about it and edited it to the period you see but whatever I’m gonna put it up and leave it.

Put in my two week notice, cleaning out the truck this weekend and the company is flying me home.

Got some things going on at home that requires me being there more often so that’s what I’m doing. Took a job in a shop basically being an apprentice making decent money surprisingly for a trucking company in the oilfield.

In a couple years when the wife finishes college, maybe I’ll be back out.

Just to be clear this had 0 to do with my company. They’ve actually been pretty wonderful to work for and would definitely go back.

I’m looking forward to it. Being home everyday and doing things with the family. I haven’t been able to be home for so many things over the last few years driving and working it’ll be a nice change of pace. Actually getting to watch my kids grow up in person rather than video chats and pictures.

Maybe you can keep your eyes open for a heavy local gig now that you have the experience.

Absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, Savage.

I hope I have the gut to do it someday. Missing out on everything going on at home really begins to take a toll on ya. Hell, I don’t even have kids.

Like others have said. If you wanna drive still keep your eyes peeled for that local heavy haul gig. Bunch of day cabs out there moving weight. ;)
