I will add to this by saying if you buy that book you should promptly round file it. The regulations are constantly changing. Read your permit and then go online to the STATE RUN WEBSITE of every state your running through. I usually google “Kentucky over dimension provisions” for example. Now scroll down to the website that ends in .gov. Don’t depend on website like “heavyhaul.net” or “wideloadshipping.com”. They could and often do have incorrect information.
First oversize.

That's the worst nightmare...smacking a bridge. I'm so paranoid on the tall loads that I have to power my phone down.jamespmack, Oxbow, QuietStorm and 2 others Thank this.
-
That’s ok just do what I do and call the sweetwater police to come stop traffic to get you turned around.
Remember stop before you get too far into trouble you can’t get out.
And I was only 14’ 4’ tall.jamespmack, Oxbow, Ruthless and 2 others Thank this. -
Also, even though it's "just" a steel plate, we all love pictures of flatbed loads.

Been there too. Missed my turn, just before dark sw of Houston in Rosenburg with 2 reels of tubing @ 14'10 tall. Got down into Rosenberg and of course I didnt sweat it because I used to live just north of there and knew the area...except for that old ### train bridge that's 14'5.
Got on the brakes and stopped inches before. Rosenburg pd got called by a tow truck driver as I was trying to back up, they shut down the road, I got backed around and they told me to have a good evening. I got my ### to Sealy and shut it down.
Me and overheight loads just dont go that well together.jamespmack, QuietStorm, Lepton1 and 4 others Thank this. -
Most any oversize trucker will tell you that height is the hardest thing to deal with.
I got on a kick of watching Mega Truckers (Australia Heavy Haulage) on Netflix awhile back. They would routinely get permits for 6m (19.6’) tall. There is no way you could pull that off across TN. I’ve done very short hauls at 20’, just moving all the power lines was twice the cost of hauling it.
Last load I was involved in that was 17’ tall, smacked a bridge just west of Nashville on I40. Luckily, our only involvement was loading it and assisting them out of the facility, once they got on the road, it was all on the other trucking company. They were warned about the low bridge, and had 3 pole cars in front, yet they still moved one of the main steel bridge beam about two feet. Anytime you are west bound I40 out of Nashville, on a bridge with no exit right before exit 188, look up and you can see the horseshoe beam.D.Tibbitt, jamespmack, Lepton1 and 6 others Thank this. -
I don’t mind weight, width, length, ugly or whatever but I despise height. Like @truckdad said, you can swerve but you can’t duck.

Day 1 has come to an end. Started earlier than normal.
All in all... idk what think lol. I’ll be honest, lot of nervousness, little fear. A lot of excitement. It’s like stepping into a rabbit hole within a rabbit hole and at this point idk if I’m a timid Alice or a joyfully excited Mad Hatter.
Picked up at lot just reading through the forum casually and from advice given here.
It’s like.. when you first started learning to drive. There’s so much going on and so much to do, that’s how it felt. Definitely a different ballgame and I didn’t think I’d actually be pulling oversized anything this soon.. but I asked for it.. and oh did I receive.
On the flip side though, as I sit here dirty, nasty, tired and hungry.. I like it. I’m just hoping things finish smoothly. I got 3 goals.
1. Keep freight on the trailer.
2. Don’t kill anyone or break anything.
3. Don’t mess up any other way and that’s where I’m at right now lol.
Thanks everyone a whole lot for all the input.
It’s time to shower and eat.negativecold13, Lepton1, QuietStorm and 6 others Thank this.
