I know a lot has to do with the trucks you are driving. The 2 trucks below are 10 sp.
The first time out for me was in a sleeper cab the school takes 4 of us out at a time in. A little drive thru town was 2 90* turns before hitting the thru way. I was told to get off and on at each exit to do breaking, down shifting and up shifting. I did pretty good for the first time and other times in that truck in town driving.
Now put me in one of the day cabs the school has and it was like I never drove a stick or truck before. It was so bad in my state test I missed an up shift just out of the yard. Told the state inspector I have not driven this truck before and the others I only had maybe 3 outing in and had issues shifting mostly down shifting. I am looking forward to driving with a load on the trailer someday soon I hope.

If I remember right...and it's been years since my dad had one... It'd manually release the spring brakes for an emergency stop?
-
Locking the trailer brake so it won't move when backing under it?

The blue was meant soley for the tractor... The again I've never driven one myself, so this is second hand knowledge from when I was a kid.
Thinking on it though you may be right...
