I'm finally at the point where my credit isn't impossible to work, and I have modest expectations. I plan to run under someone else like USA truck as an independent contractor, so do I still need my own insurance and numbers beforehand or can I just buy the truck and get to work essentially after paying the required startups associated with that?

What does Plate/Tag Program mean? I see that advertised a lot for owner operator jobs locally. I'm trying to figure out exactly what I need to go in that route and direction.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

give the company a call that you want to contract with, they have the answers to all your questions. but generally if you lease on to another company you will be under their insurance and ifta/irp . so you just need to bring the equipment.

A lot of companies will pay for your tag and for whatever else so that you can get started with less expense. You should just need bobtail insurance and they should pay the cargo insurance.
The problem with plate programs is the technically they've paid for the plate so if you could try to go someplace else you may have difficulty taking that plate with you. It is much better for you to just get your own plate.
Anything that they do for you like getting a plate Etc they're going to charge you for that. Most likely there's some type of an escrow that you will have to deposit money into every week until they have whatever that amount is. Many companies attempt to keep that escrow and not give it back to you. It is supposed to be there for paying things like your plate and if there's any fees forwarded to you or if you do anything like not give back the ELD tracking system or omnitracs or whatever else then they'll take it from your escrow, kind of like people that rent an apartment leave a deposit and if there's anything that cost the homeowner something when you leave like if you damage things or whatever they don't give you back your deposit.
Carefully read that lease before you sign it. Some companies have a lot of hidden fees that you end up getting charged for every week. It is not as simple as just going to work for them.MrCompton734 Thanks this. -
So I can literally buy a truck on my own, and run it under someone else without my own authority and insurance?
-
Screw megas. Get a truck, lease to a small carrier. They take 10-20 percent depending if you have a trailer
Badmon and MrCompton734 Thank this. -
yes that is how most owner operators do it.MrCompton734 Thanks this.
