Flagging oversize load

In California, anything over 8'6" wide is consider oversize and has to be flag on all 4 corners. I have the annual permit. I have never heard of the 1 foot on the left side to flag only. I do quite of bit of oversize here in California too. Lights are require if driving at night and there are plenty of curfews within and close to city limits. Also the annual is only for interstate, anything off the interstate requires additional city or county permit.

 

There is different provisions for construction equipment……Not different rules… But most states do specify provisions for Dozers/blades…..

Dozers with blades that exceed 12' in width, but no wider than 15', may be hauled if a traffic protector guide rail device is securely fastened to the dozer. A detached bucket or blade cannot be hauled on an overweight load.

 

It was on caltrans websight. 2 years ago it was also mentioned by cajoun scales. Oversized rides the right hand lands so cali isn't worried about the right side. There's no lanes ffurther right for anyone to worry about.

I will ask also about this snowwy. I know if your 6" over the rub rail on one side and flushed in the over side, it's considered legal, it's 102" inches total.

But if you click on the links. It says anything over 80 inches wide which don't make sense.

Flags on the left side. Lights if it's over 1 feet on the left.

 

If I read it right, it's basically saying the if the load is one sided over width.
If I have only one side that hangs over the 102" permitted by law, let's say the load is 9' and I have 1' over the left side, I would only flag and light up the left side.

 

Ok, but what if your 1 feet over on both sides? It's still only the left.

Doesn't make sense but it's california, after all. Regardless. I'm sure we all still flag and light both sides. Unless that load is ONLY traveling in cali. The other states WILL want both sides.

 

You would flag both sides if one foot over on both. I'm only Cali authorized. Other States I'm sure differ.

 

Twenty years ago at the N/B Fremont, CA scales I got schooled by a real ASxHxlx. cop on this matter. The way the law was written, VC 25104 required a flag on the LEFT side. Nothing was written about the right side. So if you were in a VEHICLE over 8'6" or your load and or trailer was over 8'6" wide it needed to be flagged on the left side. I asked the officer, " so if my load extends to the right side 4' I still dont need to flag it?" This is when he said loudly in front of everyone in the scale house, " you're not familiar with the law are you?" He said, "Write to the state legislators, they're the morons that write this bullxxxx." I never flagged the right side again unless I was going thru a metro area. Now, today I checked the CA DMV website and it appears they have rewritten 25104 to read this.
25104. (a) Any vehicle or equipment that requires a permit issued
pursuant to Article 6 (commencing with Section 35780) of Chapter 5 of
Division 15 because it is wider than permitted under Chapter 2
(commencing with Section 35100) of Division 15 shall display a solid
red or fluorescent orange flag or cloth not less than 18 inches
square at the (extremities)of the vehicle or equipment, if the vehicle
or equipment is being operated other than during darkness.
SO, it has changed, and just recently.
To be safe, I would flag the 4 corners & put lights on the same way. ANYTHING over 8'6".

 

I have always flag all four corners. And lit it up if darkness came.
