    Appreciate the input everyone.

    And for everyone that says hazmat, will I have to cut my beard? I'm fine with it but would rather not.

    You need tanker to haul totes? Ummm....no. I drag totes of highway paint all the time without hazmat or tanker endorsements. Since it is water based paint, no hazmat needed. And I've never needed tanker to haul totes.

    Sheesh! Next you guys are gonna say the dry van guys hauling bottled water, beer, or soda need tanker endorsements! After all, it's liquid!

    you do know that fmcsa changed the definition of what is a tanker right...""May 24, 2012 - That new definition captured many vehicles that are not, in the traditional sense, tank vehicles due to the fact that they lack actual tanks. Rather, FMCSA's definition expanded to cover loads containing bulk containers (greater than 119 gallon capacity) with an aggregate capacity of 1,000 gallons or more"" so if the totes WILL hold 119 or more gl. each and the total they will hold is 1,000 gl. or more you are required to have tanker... if the totes max is 118 gl. then you don't need it or if the total max is under 1,000 then you don't need it

    Totes I haul are 275 US Gal. and I generally carry 11 of them in a load. 3025 gallons total. Just checked with the extremely conservative and anal safety guy, and I don't need a tanker endorsement. And I'll take the safety guy's word, since he gets to make the call.

    NYS requires a metal coils endorsement, I know you're from PA, just throwing it out there in case anyone else is looking for info.

    Not an endorsement per say, but Alabama at one point required you to take a test online to haul coils in the state. After passing you got a card to carry with you to prove you had passed the test.

    Anyone know if they still do that? I haven't personally run covered wagons since 2011 or so.

    sorry your safety guy is STUPID and needs to RECHECK the reg's.... tell him to check 383.5 Definitions https://www.federalregister.gov/art...vehicle-used-for-determining-the-license#h-41
    * * * * *

    Tank vehicle:

    * * * * *

    (1) Means any commercial motor vehicle transporting, or designed to transport, any liquid or gaseous materials within:

    (i) A tank that is either permanently or temporarily attached or secured to the vehicle or chassis and has a rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more; or

    (ii) Multiple tanks either permanently or temporarily attached or secured, when the aggregate rated capacity of those tanks is 1,000 gallons or more, as determined by adding the capacity of each individual tank with a capacity of more than 119 gallons.

    (2) If a commercial motor vehicle transports one or more tanks that are manifested either as empty or as residue and that are actually empty or contain only residue, those tanks shall not be considered in determining whether the vehicle is a tank vehicle.

    so your 11 totes of 275 gl. each with a total of 3,025 gl. is illegal for you to pull

    I too have hauled those totes of highway paint in a reefer down to a place in KY. Didn't need an "N". I was trying to make a joke. China had to ruin it.

    The tank endorsement is 20 questions and lasts a life time. Why not just get it when your home .......

    Haz-Mat endorsement is a pain in the butt kinda....
