3/8 is what I would get. I only used 1/2" chains on the big stuff and had to keep them in my box on my trailer because the hooks were to big for my chain rack. A 20ft 1/2 inch chain weighs a ton.

In these picks this motor weighed over 80,000 and was top heavy. I used three 1/2" 10ft chains to tie down the bottom on each side and two 1/2" 20ft chains on each end. Most of the engines I hauled were smaller but I hauled two of these. Any open deck load is fun to haul, just the challenge of tying down these loads make it interesting. Who want's a job where they close two doors what fun is that.

that is exactly my outlook on this venture. My current gig pays well (when it's running) but all I do is drop and hook and hold a steering wheel for 11hrs a day. I honestly am so sick of doing it I can't wait to do some work for a change. I am also looki g forward to the manual labor, and hopefully I can get in better shape physically while I do it.

No need to buy bungee straps, the roads are littered with 'em.:biggrin_25525:

Ok, I went and took some measurements and I have 25" of room on my frame rails from my tanks to my fenders to mount a box. I also have 18" of space to put a "between the rails" box. I have 5 feet from the back of my cab to my 5th wheel slider, so i could also add a box behind the rack as well (pick-up truck square box), so i think I have enough room for stuff. Plus my battery box/tool boxes have 25" of free space and are 24" deep, then I have my side boxes too. I think I will be ok.

    Once a 16x24 tarp is folded up, would it fit into a 24" W x 24" D box??
Unfortunatley where the cat-walk grate is now on the frame, there is an airtank right below it so I can't put a between the rail box there

Get a headache rack with a tarp tray on top.

I want to keep the tarps inside as they don't last long being out in the elements I have been told, plus as you can see, my truck is a flat-top and having the extra tray hanging up there in the wind probably would not be good??

Then put them in a trailer box. Doesn't look like you have a lot of rail room for a box big enough to store tarps. I know I can fit 2 8' lumber, 1 20' x 16' steel, 1 12'x 12' smoke, and 1 11' x 8' utility tarp in a 60"x24"x18" box under my step. There is no more room after all that though.

Looks like you could take the step box off the passenger side and put a full box there. Or take the steps off and the big tank, and put a tank with steps there with another short tank behind the stack giving you room for a bigger box on the frame. It's kinda hard with the stack right through the middle there.

You might have to just strap the tarps down on the trailer and save up for a nice custom cabinet.
