Im not operating in the US but there is a lot that is the same.
Our biggest operators own truck dealerships , truck manufacturing/assembly plants , insurance companies , finance companies.
They have develop software and sell complete stock control solutions including all the warehousing , and distribution to the big FMCG players.
The trucking is just a small part of the whole package.
Perhaps just 15 to 20% of their revenue stream on a contract with someone like Proctor Gamble.
They are also moving in on the RGN type of work here.
In a large way we were forced to move away from the drive on off type of loads because of the rates dropping through the floor.
We now mainly move high value delicate loads like found in the power generation/distribution or aeronautical industries.
I find these industries are less price conscious and are to paranoid to trust their cargo to mega carries.
They want people who they know know the requirements of moving their cargo safely.
The problem with doing this type of work is that you really have to pay attention as one wrongly placed chain or strap could cost millions.
I have been trying to got in to something else because of this.
Im still doing okay but I don't see my daughters doing this in 10 or so years.
Ive taken a gamble and bet all the money Ive made in the last 3 years on other business ventures and not reinvested in trucking.
I just hope it works out or Ill be driving a truck again some time in the future.

I think it would be hard to keep JP in the office if we had a heavy haul rig.

How are you feeling about the heavy haul market? I think you are still swimming upstream against the economy, but it is a little tougher to get into that market. Hell...the idea makes me nervous. So maybe you have less competition jumping in.
