The deck loads also have to be secured correctly, and meet DOT standards (unlike van bodies, the load is in plain sight, so there is no guessing if its strapped correctly or not).

As an LTL P&D driver I get to run dry vans, reefers, heaters and decks, and dont mind any of them... but then I am not fighting with keeping equipment running (reefers and heaters) long distance... which I believe can be quite interesting at times.

The same applies here in Canada as TXLonghorn mentioned... deck work pays really well (especially if funded by an oil company!). But then there is sometimes offroad stretches, chaining up and down (even in summer because of the mud), but that is all factored into the price.

I drive a flatbed and the work can be grueling. Some stuff is hard to strap down properly and it sucks watching your mirrors all the time to see if your load is shifting or not. I'm a local delivery driver so I also unload myself. I'm sure that OTR flatbed wouldn't but then again I don't know.
Also, if you have never experienced a strap busting while going down the road let me tell you how fun of an experience that is.
