Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I think I like the idea of a mechanical, reliable engine. I'm trying to stay away from the Cats because I'd like the most economical maintenance possible. As of right now, I've narrowed it down to two options. A 1988 Mack superliner daycab with an e6 350, 12 speed and Camelback trans. And A 1981 peterbilt 359 with a big cam ii/iii 13 speed and air ride. Both have "shorter" gearing (4.10) I know I'm kind of shortchanging myself by getting a daycab with the Mack but from what I've read that engine is solid like the big cam and the price is nice. Once again, the goal is to stay within a 500 mi radius working the loadboards and getting back home everyday. It would be nice to get both tractor and trailer for $40k... Thoughts?
Thoughts: i think you’re gonna need to learn a lot in a very short amount of time to make your plan work.
One big question I have is if it's not realistic toexpect to complete a couple of these smaller ~$400 loads in a day or do I have to stick with the larger loads exclusively. I understand I have load/unload/paperwork time. Anybody have an (average) time for that with flatbed? I know it can vary significantly...and I know in the beginning I will be much slower. Basically I want to know if that's a strategy some guys are able execute....4+ loads in a day?
