Hauled many skidded coils, but used chains. I only carry about 7 straps.

Keep in mind the guy I questioned originally stated he used 2 straps not 3.

Um.....what tag? Everything I see is 15,800 which is WAY overkill since I don't know of a securement point on any trailer rated that high. You can use a anchor chain from a cruse ship but when you hook it to a 6500# pipe spool............

If you want to find the working wwl of various grade chains and straps you can go to the fmcsa website and do a search. We mostly use a grade of M70.

    Tables to §393.108
    [Working Load Limits (WLL), Chain]
    WLL in kg (lbs)
Size mm Grade 30 Grade 43 Grade 70 Grade 80 Grade 100 (inches) proof high test transport alloyallo y

Exactly it is overkill but your not hooking a strap to a spool anyway unless it has a chain at the end. My 4" straps have little white tags by the hooks and it says its rated for 18100 lbs. Without the tag it isn't good enough to tie down a tooth pick according to dot.

That's breaking strength not WLL. A 4" strap has a WLL of 5,400#

OK went and got a strap and a 5/8 chain. Guess what.....you're right working load limit of 5400 lbs. But for the chain.....3200lbs. Now back to the original argument. There really is no reason why you can't use straps on a skidded.....what was it?......14000 or 24000lb coil. It is safe as long as the strap is protected. Thanks for clearing that up jfaulk.

You must have gotten a lower grade chain than M70. A 3/8 M70 chain has a WLL of 6,600 pounds. You could probably use straps to secure a coil as long as you can protect the strap. Unless it is a coil that is on skids, I always use chains. It will give a better bite on the steel coil. I may use a strap over the top if it is loaded shotgun or perhaps eye to the sky. However, I will nearly always use chains to secure a steel coil, especially if it is loaded suicide. A strap could easily get cut if the edge protector slips. That won't happen with chains. I like straps for a number of uses, but if I need to get a good bite on the product and not want to worry about a strap getting cut, I will go with chains. One determining factor is also the product.
